I'm planning a land based trip to Truk and Palau in 2007 with my LDS. The CDC recommends a bunch of shots before going. I was wondering if anyone else has an opinion on what shots/vaccinations are recommended?

Malria meds, of course - don't leave home without it. If you haven't had a tetnas (in the last ten years) shot then get that too.

There is no malaria in Truk or Palau.

I wouldn't worry about shots for Truk or Palau.
The only diseases we have out here is Dengue Fever, another mosquito born disease

We just got back from our Palau trip. Prior to going we consulted the CDC Yellow Book as well as visited an Infectious Disease Specialist. Malaria was not mentioned by either.

The Dr gave us Hep A, Tetanus/diptheria. Hep B is only recommended if you know you are going to be coming into contact with bodily fluids (healthcare workers, etc.).

FYI, although the visit was covered under our health plan, the shots were not. Two shots each cost us a total of $150.00.

Bonne chance,

certainly HepA and Tetanus are prerequisites for foreign travel with any outdoor exposure.

You should mention TB too....:10:

In Jan. 2001, they had a general outbreak of Dengue Fever in the area, and I was competently treated at the Hospital in Koror free-of-charge by a US Navy Corpsman (treatment of Dengue victims at the time was probably being subsidized by the US Gov't as long as the Epidemic lasted). . .
Anyway, just bring DEET Spray/Lotion and be sure to use it. . .

Again, it depends entirely on the country; it's not a "given".

Ummm, Sub buddy, it was just a play on the guy's (girls's) screen name, tb...:D

I have been to both places. I did not need any special vaccines. Just make sure your routine stuff is up to date. The suggestion of Hep A isn't a bad one. I didn't take any special precautions nor did I get sick.

This is my experience. Consult your medical professional for more specific advice.
