No.
Do not drive a vehicle while on Roatan.
The roads suck, err...
the road sucks. You really cant tell the difference between the unannounced speed bumps (hey~ everyone knows where they are, right?) and the VW sized craters that we call potholes (they call it "The Road")
There are no real medical facilities nearby or for a bad accident, certainly no trauma center. Houston -
after you get on the plane - is 2 hours away. :crossbone:
The liability that you face as a gringo is absolute and complete~ even for instance with an uninvited hitch-hiker who jumps atop your car. If he gets a stubbed toe, he owns you. Do not think I am exaggerating.
There is nowhere to go that a hired driver wouldn't get you to cheaper.
The rental vehicles suck. Bad wipers and headlights are a real spook at night on the rainy roads that have no reflectors. They may have had a brand new one when Joe Diver wrote his trip report, but I have never seen it.
Motor Scooters? You gotta be nuckin' :w-t-f: futz !
"Transito" Police

olice: will stop an obvious rental vehicle and inspect paperwork and you will likely be held liable.
You don't know where to go anyway.
CCV has a staff of English speaking tour/taxi drivers that will guide you to the cool spots- even the ones that don't get talked about on SCUBABoard.
Many folks here might tell you of the good times they have had while driving around the island.
That's very nice. I, on the other hand, have worked for the island's government in a law enforcement capacity. Hire a driver. After every stop, he will stuff you and Salva Vida beers into the van and drag you off to the next island paradise photo op. There they will have Port Royal beer and slobbering yet photogenic Iguanas.
Here's the inside source of information on CoCoView (CCV) specifically and Roatan in general:

Most folks come to CCV to get those 5 dives a day. If they go anywhere, it might be to dinner once or twice in a week, or for a "last day" island tour. Just ask the activities director, then show up at the dock. Have fun.
Hire a driver. Drink, don't drive.
