CCR and OC dive buddies...this is generally an odd pairing.

I've done it as I have several friends with CCR's but in many ways we are solo diving together.

When the CCR diver has onboard bailout there is nothing to share with an OOA OC diver.

If the CCR diver has problems there isn't that much that the OC diver can do.

The best that I've been able to come up with is just to carry a bailout bottle for myself and to learn how to flush the loop for the specific CCR being used by my buddy.

How do others handle this? Reply if you dive with CCR divers or if you yourself use a CCR.

I carry offboard bailout and discussed dive plan with OC buddy prior to the dive. I think this is an important part of pre-dive planning and one that I've observed several CCR divers leave out with "insta buddies."

Don't have tons of experience diving with CC buddies but on the occasions I have someone (usually the rebreather buddy) carries an OC bailout.

I wouldn't be able to help a CC buddy with his kit either (and probably shouldn't try) but bailing from CC to OC isn't as problematic so the gas plan is just worked out on the worst case scenario that the CC diver needs to bail to your back gas and ride OC with you to the surface.

I invited an OC diver to share their dive experience with two CCR divers in [-]the[/-] this thread, but they haven't responded yet.

I'll leave details to them (if they participate), but our pre-dive briefing covered the basics of what they could do for me if I had a problem and specifics about what we would do for them if they had one.

I'm OC and have buddied with a CCR diver once; it was a recreational MDL dive and the CCR diver was on an MC90. In our case, the OOG response is almost exactly the same as it would have been had both divers been on OC. We had the same gas (I had 32%, his back-mounted dil was 32%), he had a long hose from the diluent clipped to the right chest d-ring to donate in the event of an OOG, and he could switch to on-board bailout, his long hose, or remove the loop to accept my long hose if needed. Having never dived with a CCR buddy before, it was good to know that mixed teams ARE possible with certain setups.

My regular buddy is on a Kiss classic, has been now for a few years and we have done some 300+ dives together.. Myself on OC.

He has a quick disconnect system on his Kiss that allows him to plumb in his bailout / deco gases right into his BOV, while still having a 5 foot hose and 2nd stage on the bottles. Thus if we both go into a need of his bottles we can share them.

We plan all of our dives based on Cubic Footage, meaning the rule of 3rds really does not apply he does carry bail out sufficient to get me and him out of the water safe. Ideally like said we are both solo divers however no reason to not air a little on the cautions side and ensure each team made has sufficient gas.

I've only done one dive with a CCR buddy, but we went over the unit pre-dive -- how to add O2, dil flush, or convert to OC -- and in the event of me having a catastrophic gas loss, he had rock bottom in dil to share (dil was bottom mix).

Not much you can do?? Give him your primary, just might save his life..
