I have booked a liveaboard cruise on board the Cayman Aggressor in mid-January 2014 and am wondering what the dives will be like. I read that in winter the dives will mostly be on the western abd southern parts of Grand Cayman; if so, what is the marine life like in those parts? I also took note of the risk that in winter there is a small chance of the crossover to Little Cayman being cancelled due to rough seas and so arranged to fly across to Little Cayman after the cruise and do 8 more (land based) dives there. Was it a good thing to do?

I've done some of the dives listed here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/ag...n-aggressor-iv-captains-logs.html#post6599767 so if your trip is similar, here's what I'd consider the highlights. We stayed on Grand Cayman but it's the same sites.

Trinity Caves is an excellent dive - one of the best in the NW Point area. Big Tunnels is another - long deep swim-thru. Watch for Turtles shallow, when they get disturbed they hover around till you leave. We had a couple cruising near us during our entire safety stop. Orange Canyon would be another to ask about.

Babylon is slightly farther east. I could make a case for it being one of the best dives off Grand Cayman. My buddy dove it this past January and they were trailed on several dives by a couple of reef sharks looking for a Lionfish snack. He turned once and almost kicked one in the head. Other divers earlier in the week saw a big Hammerhead there also. The drop off the North Wall there is stunning - you strain your eyes to see things 3-400' down the wall. It goes to 6,000' in that area.

Ghost Mountain is another possibility in that area - equally as good. Less likely unless conditions are excellent. Eagle Ray Pass (not Rock) or Hammerhead Hill would be others to ask about. These 4 dives are more likely to be blown out in the winter - my buddy was land based at the East End and it took them three tries to get to Babylon.

Aggressor is doing both the Kittiwake and the Poulson wrecks also. CITA dropped the Kittiwake near the Sand Chute dive site - it's different, kind of a steep drop-off of sand not reef. Interesting dive - something you don't see every time off Cayman. I think you could do both in one dive but IDK. I haven't dove the Poulson but it was "the" wreck pre-Kittiwake. Since Kittiwake was prepped for diving, it's very accessible to all levels of divers.

And Sting Ray City is highly entertaining - the other signature Cayman dive.

If the Aquarium site they mention is the one I know off the West side, it's one of the better shallow dives. Big coral patches with sandy areas between them. Several have fluorescent Coral Shrimp at cleaning stations - look for fish hovering just off the reef. My buddy had his cuticles trimmed by one - just slowly hold your hand out and they'll climb on. They didn't like me...

The last dive - Devils Grotto - is right in downtown Georgetown so sees a lot of cruise divers. It's swim-thru's with a few Tarpon lingering around. It's epic in the summer when the Silversides are there but that's only in July/August - won't be the highlight of your trip. But doesn't exceed 40' or so if you're near no-fly limits - it seems to be their last dive. Considering that the dock is about 100 yds. away I can see why.

You can see HD video of a lot of the sites they mention here: Welcome To iDive! | iDive

Hopefully you can make the run over to one of the Sister Islands. Diving is better off Little Cayman - Bloody Bay Wall is one of the best in the world. No personal experience but it's on my bucket list. Check this out: The Bloody Bay Wall Mural Project

hth,

Thanks diversteve. That was very informative.

You mentioned Stingray City. I have read about it a few times but thought that it was off the northern coast of Grand Cayman? If so, I am worried that the seas might get too rough foe the boat to go there in January time.

As for Little Cayman, I was aware of the risk of the boat not going there at all and so, as mentioned in the first post, booked a local return flight after the lievaboard cruise. I have booked 8 dives with Little Cayman Beach Resort over 3 dive days.

They must be running all the way around the island in January. Of the dives they listed - all of the ones I commented on are off NW Point or the North Side. SRC is at the edge of the North Sound. It's also only 15' deep so I'd bet that they tender you in there from the Aggressor moored off the north side somewhere. Or dock and transfer you to a dayboat - there's a couple of marinas on the north/west sides.

About the only ones that are due west - mid-island are the Kittiwake and Aquarium. Some of the others they mentioned - Bullwinkle - is due south. Pedro's Castle is south of Bodden Town, yet the next day they were back at NW Point to dive Trinity Caves/Big Tunnels.

One thing that kind of seemed weird is that they seemed to jump all over the island on that trip - assuming they did the dives in the order presented. My guess it they're moving the ship all over the island at night - it's not a very long trip. One of the day boat ops does a three tank that completely circles Grand Cayman during the day.

I didn't comment on any of the South or East sites listed on their trip report since I've never dove that area. We dove Blackie's Hole near Eagle Ray Rock once. I've never heard of Killa Puffa, I sense that's a name they made up. But there's also 365+ sites off Grand Cayman so who knows.

This map lists a lot of popular sites - Cayman Islands Dive Site Map including many we're discussing in this thread.

North in the mouth of the North Sound is Stingray City. Slightly right is Hammerhead Hill/Eagle Ray Pass. Right of that by Old Man Bay is Babylon. Big Tunnels/Trinity Caves are all the way to the left around NW Point. And Aquarium and the wrecks are south of there. Evidently the boat circles the entire island during the week if they don't go to the Sisters.

You did notice that the trip report in my link was from this January...

Diversteve that mural link was awesome! Thanks for that
