@lukeb , I looked at the diagrams - they make sense, probably because I was taught that way... The diagrams imply that the "thick" REM side points to the exit. Not sure if that is entirely correct, as REMs are individual markers and some divers may choose to use the "thin" end to point to the exit. Explaining these options in the diagrams would have been better.

They actually suggested not using presence markers, but they acknowledged that some people do use them. That is why they showed the diagram.

That was something I liked about the book. Where there are two options for a procedure, they presented both methods with clear diagrams, while giving their opinion on which one they preferred. Although this didn't happen often. I think the goal of the book was to get everyone on the same page, and following the same procedures.

That is how I use REMs (thick end out) and how I believe they are generally used. The book explains this in the text, and how REMs are positioned and used. It does explain how it is diver preference, and the whole point of a REM is that it is only directional to the person who placed the REM. They did a good job in the text of explaining the use of markers.
