mantis shrimps can get to 30cm long

Am I correct that the strike of a mantis shrimp can generate a very audible "pop"? I saw a fellow once try to get one to strike to demonstrate this, but the shrimp was not in a cooperative mood.

i've seen a camera dome snaps open by one of these, flooded in a second, poor lady gave up diving for the rest of the trip!

It is a mantis shrimp, aka thumb splitters. They can give you severe lacerations.
"Thumb splitter".. Now why does that give me the idea that I should keep my hands away from those things?

Man, that be one funky looking shrimp. If we found one on another planet it wouldn't seem so strange, but here it is right in our own ocean. I wonder what it has against thumbs? :11doh:

Mantis Shrimp is what they called, this is what they look like in the warmer Caribbean:

Notice the difference in the eyes? The second critter here has the same eyes as the orig image.
Are they both called Mantis Shrimp? Just found out that yes- they are.

In the hands of a skilled sushi chef, they're also delicious. :D
