Going to Catalina (Avalon) next week, any news on current conditions, temp, vis, particularly good sites, etc., would be nice. This is my third trip, but I haven't been this late in the fall. And how easy to take a camera through the kelp ?

Hard to tell this far in advance. There are minor storm warnings (only 10-30% rain chances) issued for next week.

Conditions today include continuing good visibility (up to 70' depending on site and depth), some orbital surge and an increase in temp at depth (it was 61 to 64 F at depths of 110-120' today, about 5-8 degrees higher than just a few days ago).

Today's temps were 53 at 160' and 64 at 36 ft. You can check my dive log on my web site to see what current temps at my dive depths are. I post depth and temp (the latter at the far right of the last column on each dive).

Dr. Bill Bushing's Dive Log

Hope that helps.

Hi, does anyone have the current water temps at depth around Catalina?

According to Dr Bill's log up to last week, it looks like the temps were cooling down fast...

Thanks, and see ya on Tuesday! :D

My computer showed a nice and much appreciated 63 degrees in 60-90 feet the last two days at the Avalon Dive Park. Viz was also great; up to 50-60 feet.

Have fun,
Gerald

Thanks! We had beautiful weather around Catalina island - hot and sunny! The water temp was relatively warm - low 60's. The vis was about 30 - 50 feet.
Thanks for the info! :)
