OK im a newbie at flying with gear. I am carrying on a backpack. What else can I reasonable expect to be able to walk on the plane with as carry on? Flying Delta if that would matter.

I just returned from Cozumel and had a great experience :). I carried, in my backpack, my regs, computer, dive light, camera housing (Ikelite) and mask. I also carried several other items, but these were the most important to me. I had no problems with TSA or the officials in Mexico.

I hope that helps. :)

I will have those items in the backpack. Guess im asking is the backpack all I can carry on or can I carry an addtional computer or bag or ?

The usual rule on the major US carriers on regular jets is one carryon and one "personal item" That is what I would expect on a Delta flight to Coz. (It can vary on small planes, charter flights, some non-US carriers, cheapo airlines, or with the phase of the moon.) I take a typical rolling carry-on that has mask/regs/computer/some clothing and other stuff. And a small backpack as my personal item (book type not camping type) that goes under the seat with my netbook, reading, munchies, and all sorts of little stuff.

Yep, generally one carry- or roll-on within airline limits counting wheels and handle for length, plus one personal bag (laptop or camera bag, backpack).

Do not pack your camera in the roll-on as sometimes they get gate checked. I know of one broken that way. Keep passport, money, cameras, meds, the most important stuff in the backpack and never let it leave your body other than at security - where you hold onto it until you and it are going thru at the same time. When I empty my pockets, I empty them into the backpack, not a tray.

I like that advice. I'll be doing that the next time I go through...
I've heard horror stories of people losing valuables, wallets, etc. in the commotion of the security line, and of course you don't want a disruption that could lead to extra screening. Keeps it simple.

You might take a couple of extra quart ziplocks, one for that purpose, the other to share with the needy. There is often some green flyer in line who didn't know.

I saw a new story today about an actor who tweeted that he accidentally took a knife thru security, successfully. I did that once. The agent saw it on Xray, couldn't find it on inspection, finally gave up and let me go, and I found it only later...

Don gives great advice about the possibility of a rolling bag being gate checked. With checked baggage costing so much, everyone seems to be pushing the limits of carry-on (not that I blame them) and very often the overhead bins get full very quickly.

I usually bring my reg bag with 2 sets of regs, and my back pack with my AGA mask and pony bottle with the valve out. Just came back from Coz that way. I do print the TSA regulation stating it is ok to have an empty tank and I almost needed it but the Mexican asked his supervisor and all was good.
