Has anyone seen or had their carry on luggage weighed ?

Most of my travel has been in the United States and Caribbean where carry on weight limits are around 40 lbs.

I noticed all the non U.S. airlines have much lower carry on weight limits around 15 lbs. / 7kg. Are these limits regularly enforced ? That's a pretty low limit and would basically eliminate all the wheeled carry on bags.

here, we only do it interisland on small planes.

They sometimes enforce the two items though

Flyertalk forum has a lot of scoop on regional practices..

Yes many airlines weigh carry on items. They are actually discussing reducing the carry on limit to 5lbs.

BTW - The checked in allowance is only 44lbs on many foreign airlines,

If they are overweight are you forced to check them with the regular bags ?

I'm asking because I like to carry on my fragile video equipment. If I will be forced to check the equipment with the regular bags, I guess I will have to buy a Pelican case.

I think you might get more accurate info if you tell us which airline and to where. I've never had my carryon weighed. Not on any domestic flight, carribbean flight to or from the US. I did not have it weighed on China Airlines, Aer Lingus, Nepal Air either.

It will depend on how tiny the plane is and how close to their weight limit they are playing it.

I going on a liveaboard in Indonesia. Ambon to Sarong.

Most likely flying Singapore Airlines from the U.S. to Bali. From Bali to Ambon a 2 hr flight on a domestic local airline, then from Sarong back to Bali a 5 hour flight.

Singapore specifically lists a 15 lb. limit for carry on. I don't know the names of the local airlines.

I'd get the Pelican case.

If you fly AA to Bonaire from San Juan for example, it's not the weight but the size. They have twin turboprop planes and a standard carry-on won't fit in the overhead bins, they're something like 9x15x?. The only good thing is that they hand-check on the tarmac so it's loaded last.

I had the same problem on a USAirways Express flight last summer to Mexico.

A good trick I read is to put the Pelican case inside a cheap soft bag. So it doesn't look like "expensive video gear" to everyone who sees it.

US carriers and passengers ticketed in the US get a different baggage allowance in many cases. My parents can fly on British Airways from London to Tampa, and they are allowed one 50lb bag checked in and 15lbs of carry on each. I can take the same flight in the opposite direction with a US issued ticket and my allowance is doubled.

Be careful if it's Air Asia - they are pretty strict with excess baggage and will charge. They offer very cheap fares within Asia, and make their money back with the excess charges - esp. divers !! They usually have a limit of 15kg for checked baggage.

For the longer haul flights, most airlines outside the US offer 20kg checked baggage, and as an instructor I'm always over this with all my paraphenalia. I usually have about 25kg in my checked bag (haven't been charged yet - touch wood), and then stuff a load into my hand luggage too. My hand luggage is always over the limit - I put all the small heavy stuff in, including regs. Only been stopped at the boarding gate once with this (and that was in Australia - they like their rules over there ! :D ), and they just took it off me and put it in the hold - no charges.
