I loved the dive on that lava flow by Banda Neira! Staghorns!

So happy to hear that there is recovery from the bleaching! :)

I need to book my trip this weekend! Eek!

What did you have to do in order to transfer between boats? I'm going to do a 15 day Gan - Male and then 11 day Male-Male, I think...

Nothing. Just inform the Deep South liveaboard that you will be on split stay, so they won’t schedule you on PCR test by the end of the trip. Then when you board the next boat, then tell the Cruise Director (CD) that you’ll need the PCR test within 72 hours before your departure. CD will arrange a medical professional to board on the boat & do swab test for the guests that need one before going home.

I thought there was some kind of transfer authorization from going from one resort/boat to another?

Some resorts may require you to take another PCR test. Emperor Leo doesn’t. I have 2 night stay in Hulhumale after disembarking Carpe Vita & before boarding Emperor Leo. Huvan Beach hotel would not require me to get another PCR test. A couple from my group was supposed to stay In Sheraton hotel, they didn’t let the couple to checkin, so the couple cancelled the booking & moved to other hotel. So it’s good to check yourself for your split stay situation.

Great trip report! I did two weeks on the Vita in Feb, and now wish I’d written a live trip report while on the boat. Your approach is much better than my trying to piece it all together afterwards.

Thanks for your kind words! This approach definitely helps me retaining the info, getting answer for the source right away, breaking down task in smaller (piece meal) manageable way, writing final report much easier & quickly at the end of the trip by simply linking it to this thread and attaching the trip pictures & videos.

I like their lay-back Maldivian attitude, not the high-strung sticking by the rule of the other foreign-run liveaboard.

1.) Does the boat have an option for tanks larger than the typical 80-cf tank? If so, what are most divers using?

Most boats have a majority of 12l Al tanks, and some 15l steel tanks- Best contact the operator in advance to make sure of availability.

2.) It's one thing to briefly dip down to see something special, another to spend substantial time at depth (e.g.: 'square profile' diving - like on the offshore wrecks out of North Carolina). Are you guys spending much time at those depths? What depths do you tend to use the reef hooks?

Most channel dives are square profile at depth of 30-35m hooking on a ledge - you won't see anything special if sticking to shallower depths as it is going to be too far away from the scene of action. When you get close to whatever ndl limits you're comfortable with, unhook and drift into the channel, deploy smb and wait for pickup.

3.) Does having a good SAC rate/gas consumption rate seem especially important for Maldives diving? Is that something that people who aren't good at it might consider grounds to pick another destination?

Nah, even 45 minute dives are great

4.) Is everyone diving nitrox?

I've seen air divers too, but doesn't make sense in an intense diving safari, where many dives are sqaure/deep and long.

5.) Why are they diving that deep (compared to, say, the Cayman Islands, where one could easily do so but doesn't)? Are you looking for something specific to those depth?

Aye, channel ledges are where you see schools of sharks and action

6.) How does the diving depth of a Maldives trip compare to Raja Ampat, Komodo or Palau? Any idea?

A number of Scuba Boarders seems to have gills, but not all of us are like that. The best way to bring a smile to my face at a dive shop is to say 'Why yes, we rent 120-cf steel tanks!'

Departure Day
Today’s plan is to have breakfast at 7am then at 8am the crew would take us to the Male airport. I’ll be staying 2 more days in Hulhumale (an extension city of Male, next to the airport where Chinese are heavily investing, developing & constructing quite few buildings there) before boarding on Emperor Leo for “The Best of The Maldives” trip. Hopefully I’ll be able to repeat the “Real Time Review” of that next trip like I did for this trip.

3 dives a day is the norm for all liveaboards I've ever dive on. Most have a couple of night dives scheduled throughout the week.

I have far less experience than you, but this strikes me as odd - my experience, limited as it is, must have been atypical. I've done four liveaboards so far; two in Thailand, one in the Philippines and one in the Red Sea, and all four had four dives per day as standard, doing fewer than that only when the boat is in a long transit to somewhere. Fitting four 1-hour dives into a day doesn't seem to have ever been an issue.
Is the 3 dives per day thing peculiar to Maldives (maybe due to lots of long transits between atolls?) or is it common in other destinations that I simply haven't yet been to?

Most of liveaboards I have been on (20+) offer 4 dives / day + night dive - sailing time. In addition to your list, Indonesia (Komodo, Raja Ampat, Banda Sea), Palau, GBR, Texas, Florida, Galápagos, and Socorro offer the 4 dives / day. Only Cocos & Maldives offer 3 dives / day.
