Looks like I might be leaving Florida. Hubby is willing to compromise with me by staying somewhere fairly warm but not near the ocean. He has had it with hurricanes.

Can you guys recommend places in North or South Carolina that are within a reasonable (3-4 hours) of the shore, near a major airport, are suburban but not too far out and that have freshwater dive locations????

I might think about opening a dive training center somewhere that has a need but a nearby lake or quarry would be a good thing.

Thanks for the help!

Renee,

I know a guy with a house for sale in Gibsonville. It's about an hour from Raleigh or Greensboro (airport), anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 1/2 hours from about 4 quarries. 4 hours from the beach. great bunch of active divers in the area.....NCDiver2004 if you want to PM him.

Hehehehehhe

Charlie......a potential buyer!!!!

Check out ncdivers.com for the active group in NC.

yep, raleigh area fits the bill! and we love to dive!!

Actually only 2 1/2 from Wrightsville Beach, 4 hours from Moorehead for NC "tropical" diving. Thanks for the pitch, Kristi! Burlington/Greensboro (30 min from B'ton) could use come competition...

Yeah but the downtown scene in Charlotte (not like I see it much these days  ) is better than Raleigh/Durham. Plus we have the Panthers and Bobcats here!

Raleigh and Charlotte are great picks for an inland move. I recently moved to Charlotte from around the Raleigh area and I love it here. Only bad thing about Charlotte is you're about 4 hours from the coast but you are only six from Northern Florida! I'll find out on Friday about the coastal drive. I guess your move would also depend on your job if you don't instruct/run a shop FT. I also lived in Charleston, SC, for three years and it is nice but I like NC better.

Yeah, you might want to consider checking out Charlie's house!! Not far from three different quarries if you moved there. We've also got a very active dive club in the NC area. Maybe that will help persuade you to pick our state. :D

Hubby is pushing for NC - I just hate to put on sweaters so was trying to stay as south as possible. I'm a cold wussy!

Charlie - tell me about your house. I'm thinking that we are looking at a six month window however since we have to do hurricane repairs before even thinking about selling.

Renee, we sure could use another NAUI instructor in Raleigh (says the lone NAUI cert holder of the group). I think a lot depends what type of work your husband is looking for Raleigh area or Charlotte area are probably your best bets for employment.

Part of the reason we will move is that he already has a job he can do from anywhere. He's a field service rep and is based from home. That's why we need an airport nearby so he can travel to his customers.

If he drags me out of Florida part of the deal is that I get to persue my teaching more aggressively. I also teach CPR/FA/O2. And I have been a tour director so as long as there is some local tourism I can get some work. No more offices for me! I'll work for myself or else we stay put!

Raleigh or Charlotte will offer him the best options for flights out. Depends on which airlines he uses most. Charlotte is a HUB for USAir, but lots of flights out of Raleigh via American, Delta, USAir, Southwest, Northwest, Continental. I am sure Charlotte has lots too.

You may want to research housing costs to help make a decision.

Renee, I live in the Charlotte area and if there is anything I can help you with please feel free to ask.
