I'd be surprised if they did prepreg for the production parts. Parts in the aftermarket automotive industry are very rarely done in prepreg and they're done in much higher volumes. With a niche product like a backplate, I can't see a company justifying the extra costs.

An aluminum insert in between the layers probably is what they're doing, but it's a horrible idea. Carbon and aluminum in a saltwater environment is a recipe for lots of galvanic corrosion. Titanium is the right material for the job, but again with the extra costs and being a niche product.

Go gold and show that you have bling

When you think diving equipment needs more bling :)

Gold is old. A Louis Vuitton wrap would be better, with a Gucci wing.

All thank you for your insights and some very strong opinions. Even know the CF plate I’m looking at is only €9 I think I will stick with something that has a long and reputable history. I think I will start looking for a good travel rig in aluminum. Thanks again for all your inputs.

Respectfully
Woody

This is also an option worth considering. The raw carbon fiber for a backplate, ignoring any resin used, is going to cost at least twice that. (Assuming 1.5 sq ft of cloth used, per ply, and 10 plies used for a backplate that's a bit under 1/8" thick with cloth at $19 per running yard of 50" wide 5.7oz 2x2 twill from a commercial supplier when buying an entire roll)

While I applaud your proposal for a Gucci wing, the outfit would not be complete without some Salvatore Ferragamo rock boots.
