Do you know if you can rent a car right at Habitat Curcacao itself? Anyone know what a cab to Willemsted would cost?
I don't think Habitat itself rents vehicles (though I think they used to) so getting one there for just a half day here or there isn't an option if that's what you have in mind. I don't know what a cab to town would cost but probably not cheap. We took a cab to a restaurant that's relatively close once (Landhuis Daniel) and I recall it being pretty expensive. Probably because any cab driver is going to come from downtown anyway.

But the car rental places will come out to Habitat and pick you up, take you to the office to do the paperwork, then you leave with the car. So you could get there with the regular airport transfer, then go get a car another day. We did this the first time we stayed there, after realizing there was no way we wanted to be there without a car.

We had a day at Habitat Curacao on our way home from Bonaire last week. We rented a small car from Thrifty at the airport, no problems with it and it was in good condition. I noted that there is a car rental at on site Habitat Curacao as well. Have a great trip.

Sorry Damselfish, I missed your post. They had new looking posters in reception for hire cars, but I would check if they do still rent cars out.

I seem to remember seeing a budget rental outside the lobby of Habitat? It is about 30 min drive from the airport. Avis at the airport worked for us. It is also about 45 min to town from Habitat and based on the one taxi I took to cross downtown(make sure the floating bridge is there becaues the ferry stops at 8:00) I would guess 40-50 buck to get one way in taxi.

Hi,

I will be at Habitat Curacao for 9 nights.

I guess I will have to get a rental car at the airport for my entire stay but will actually probably use the car for a day (or just a run into town) here and there.

If Habitat had a rental agency on-site I could rent the car as I need it.

Thanks,

Sy

Hi,

I just called Habitat Curacao and they do have a car rental office on site.

Defin rent at airport. We used Budget last march. They were great to work with. After collecting your luggage, go out front door of airport, head to the right following the sidewalk. Tha car rental places are all in what used to be the old terminal.. I think you need to buy the big fold up map for $3. It was great. We were there for 14 days and it ran $300 +-.

We used Budget when we were down there. We rented a truck.

Stop at the stand on the way to the rental counter for Amstel beer. :D

We were drinking Amstel when we got our rental car. They don't let you do that here in the states. :rofl3:

The police here also are very lax in enforcing the speed limit. Drive whatever you feel comfortable with, whether that's 10kph or 100kph (just be careful of the goats).

If the traffic is light, you easily can get from Hato to Habitat in 20 minutes, and the traffic is rarely a problem on that stretch of road (unless some chowderhead has failed to yield to the goats). Sunday mornings, I usually can get from Piscadera to Sunset Waters -- which is several km further west than Habitat -- in less than 25 minutes.

There are cars for rent at Habitat, however, they are really small and manuals. I wanted something a little bigger, automatic and with A/C. One of the ladies at the front desk arranged it for us with a local company. (I think it was Sunshine Car Rental, but I'd have to find the info from the trip to be sure. I did get their card). They brought the car to the hotel, did all the paperwork there, etc. They also picked it up at the hotel. There was no extra charge for the drop-off/pick-up service, but we did have to wait until around 4p to get the car.

We had transfers included in our package and also didn't want a car for the full time. This worked out well and I'll do it again next trip.

We loved the goats. When we went to the Centrum after we left the airport there was a herd of goats humping at the intersection. I was laughing to hard to get a shot.

We made a point of having our cameras ready to take goat pictures when ever we were driving around. They were on top of walls, in the road, on the side of the road.

Here's one I keep laughing at.
