Hence the reason for asking

Any particular reason you don't like the Sealife? Would it not be a good match for the A710? Would two of them be a reasonable solution, or is there some terrible feature/drawback that I have overlooked. And, yes, I have read the pink link...

HI. I use a Sealife SL960D (not the SL960 for Reefmaster) strobe slaved to my Canon A520+housing. It is cheap ($300 at Scubatoys, less at Leisure-Pro if in stock). It allows the shooter to adjust flash intensity manually (I find less is better and frequently use the minimum setting) and lasts >100 shots on 4AA batteries.
When I was shopping for a strobe, I also looked into the INON as well as Ikelite strobes, but got the Sealife because of the lower price.
TTL strobe is a more expensive option. Even more expensive is using a Canon flash like F580EX flash and housing, such as:

add a syn cord and mounting tray and this can easily cost over $1000.
As a poster above says, you need to be sure the strobe is compatible with the camera.

From my admittedly limited experience with these strobes, the recycle time alone would drive me crazy. And 100 frames for a set of 4 AAs(from their web site) wouldn't do me at all...I'd definitely have to change out between dives most days.

They might be just fine for what you want and for your budget, but you may find that they are restrictive and will lead to moving strobes again later...imho I'd spend the bucks now as good strobes should last for years and years! BUT it's all a trade-off...you might be right, better to have some now and change later...I'd just be grumbling about the money I'd already spent LOL

What about the Inon D-180? Any feelings on pairing that with an A710?

I just took out my a710 with a sealife sl960 (non-digital) strobe today. Vis was 8-10ft.
It actually worked better than I thought it would! I added some pics to my gallery if you want to check them out.

I did have to make myself a diffuser out of a container lid and some white paint since the strobe only fires at full and it would blow everything out without it.
