I'm using a canon S1 IS outside for a year now. I was wondering if this camera would be a gooo UW cam ? I know that there is a housing build for it, but I don't know if it is possible to add a strobe or extra light on it. Does anyone can help me ?

Thank you !!

I love my Inon strobe - just don't freak out when you see the strobe is more than the camera and housing ;) All good strobes are a bit pricey, but well worth it for the results!

It is possible to add a strobe and it's better to have one. The reason being that the S1's lense is pretty long, and using internal flash will cause a shadow at the bottom of the picture when taking macro shots. An extension arm will be even better as it will let allow you to place your strobe at different angles.

All the pictures in my gallery are taken with the S1 and a SunPak G-Flash, and I agree with Alcina that the Inon is much better.

You seem to be happy with the S1 has UW camera ... I'm happy to hear that ! I was thinking about selling my S1 to buy a "real" diving camera. Thank you for your time replying my post.

I got so many questions now !!!

The first one is very important to me as I'm diving in very cold water where I need to wear 7mm 3 fingers gloves... Do you think that the functions and release button are big and easy enough to use ?

Can we use macro and wide angle lenses on the S1 IS with the UW housing ?

Do you know what company offers an extension arm that fits on the S1 Housing ?

Thanks a lot again !!

Oh, you mean something like this?

Thank you Liberato !!

Your galery is very impressive ! I would like so much to have the chance to dive at the maldives !!

Did you took your pictures with the Canon S1 IS ? If so, what other pieces of equipment did you use ?

Thanks for your time !

No, just an old Canon S-30 with no external strobe. Getting a strobe is the step that reveals seriousness. Almost there.

Thanks for the kind thoughts but thay are really just first-time point-and-shoot junk (using built-in flash) and indicate more how awsomely rich the underwater environment is there than any photographic skill. I have used the S1 IS on land and it is nice, especially the video function.

I have not done any cold water photography so I can't comment on the glove issue other than to say I think there might be a problem with such thick gloves when using the Canon housing. You could always glue an extenstion on the shutter button (it doesn't stick up very far). The rest of the controls should be OK.

I would like to have a better idea of what the S1 IS is able to do UW. Using that camera for a year, I'm not sure. I notice that the AF system of the S1 is not very performant in low light environment.

Is there some S1 users that could encourage with their good experiences ?

Thanks a lot !

I have the S1 with SunPack G Flash as well.
I seem to have some trouble finding the right output: without falsh(external or internal) my pics are blue-ish; with the internal flash they have a tendency to be overexposed; with the external flash they are way overexposed.
What do I do wrong?
Also: when I zoom close, the pic becomes totally blurry - as in unusuable.
I have read somewhere that the best camerazoom are your fins...
Thx for suggestions/help
