Hello,
I want to know can I use the built-in flash when I use the Canon s1 housing. Thank you very much. :06:

If it is the Canon WP-DC20 housing for the Canon S1-IS camera it looks like you can from the pictures of it.

I have a Cannon S1 and just got back from Cozumel...

You can use the internal flash...if used in Auto...the camera will activate it for you.....

Hi,
Thank you for your info. I had been to Cozumel last Nov. Do you like there? How about your s1? Did you take any movie with it? If yes, how about the quality of the movie?

Movie quality rocks. Took some awsome footage of reef sharks in Koh Tao last week.... only prob is loading 70Mb of .avi to my website.
some stills at www.pbase.com/hamilton_w/odyssey/water..... will try to get the movies up when I get some editing time.

FWIW, the image quality on vga fine (640x480 with limited compression) is super sharp, and 'user error' (including my inability to focus on sharks properly) has much more impact on image quality than the camera does.

Off to Manado next week, so will post more images shortlyl.

you can recompress your AVIs (from quicktime compression) to DIVX and they will be at least half the size (I use virtualdub (www.virtualdub.org) and DIVX codec)

btw. someone mentioned that they use auto mode uw, but my feeling is that in that mode flash often doesn't fire up so I use program mode (P) and usually force the flash to shoot.

You can force the flash to fire in most modes by merely pressing the flash button until the flash icon is on. Almost all my photography is done using aperture priority (AV) and can force the flash on if necessary.

Hi all,
Those with S1's, please indulge me this question:
- in what 'modes' can you turn the flash OFF.

On my S1, I can NOT turn the flash OFF when in P mode (and I think also not in any of the other 'creative' modes, such as Av, Tv etc. The only one that lets me turn the flash off is the 'running man' mode (high shutter speed).

There are times (silty, distance shots) when having no flash is an advantage... of course, you could always put the flash down, but once in the housing, and under water, that is not an option.....

It may be I missed something obvious in the menu settings, but I did a fairly thorough test.

Thanks for the divx link... when I get to Oz in a few months and have access to a computer I can load s/w onto (and the time to spend fiddling around) I'll do some vid editing.

Oh, and Manado (Bunaken Island, Nth Sulawesi) was awesome, but will have to find a decent net cafe to do the uploads.

May I suggest you refer to the manual - there is a matrix at the back where it shows you what facilities are available for which modes.

AFAIK, I can turn the flash off in all modes except "P" and "Auto"

Yeah, it might show what _should_ work.... I don't have the manual to hand, but I remember looking for such a table, and not being able to find the answer. (along with an explanation of what the 'eejit' modes do, which I couldn't find either)

I went thro' all the 'modes' yesterday, and I can't turn the flash OFF in any of the 'creative' (P, Tv, Av, C) modes. I CAN turn it off in the 'eejit' modes (running man, portrait, mountain etc).

This is only a problem when using the housing AND when the flash is already popped up.... which leads me to think it is just a small design flaw. (which in my experience of Canon kit is unlikely).

Would you be so kind as to try turning the flash OFF in P mode on your camera... it may be mine has a real fault?
