Hello,

This is my first post here but I've been lurking for a while.

I'm in a bit of a pickle, I'm leaving for a trip tomorrow and I lost the silicone grease tube that came with my A95 housing. At the LDS the guy mentioned that if I use the wrong kind of grease the o-ring might swell and not seal properly. I ended up buying this silicone lube from Trident, he said its generic but to NOT use it for certain brands (aquatica, amphibico, nikon and c&c from what I remember) but he didn't know about Canon.

So, should I just use the o-ring without lube (I lubed it the last time I went diving) or should I try this generic grease?

I'm leaning towards not using the generic lube but I just wanted your opinions.

Cheers

I can't promise you that I'm right on this.

But I THINK that the Canon o-ring is more plastic-y than rubbery. I suspect the rubber would be more prone to any swelling than plastic. So I think the Canon o-ring would probably be fine with some generic silicon.

Just an educated guess, though. You could probably call Canon to find out for sure.

The Canon o-ring is a silicone oring, I believe.

Orings don't necessarily need grease each and every time. The grease keeps the oring supple, it doesn't, in itself, help with the seal.

I can't remember the last time I used grease on my Canon A series o-ring. Sometimes I will lick my fingers and run the oring through them...just the tiniest bit of moisture. For me, it's more about making sure the oring is totally soft and totally clean.
