ok. In another thread there was a short debate on sp350 vs G9. Now i wanna hear comments on the two fully. If u have SP350, would u sell it and buy G9 or just keep it?

Olympus manage to increase the shutter speed for Raw format by introducing "H" card. Do u think Olympus will ofeer a higher rating XD card then "H" class to increase the speed for Raw Formatting?

Thx in adavnce for your commenst on this issue.

Hi,

the SP350 is old, the G9 is new - so G9 itself is faster, better etc.pp. - and more expensive. I bought a brand new housing PT-030 (special offer) plus a second-hand SP350 for 210 EUR.

Olympus will -in my opinion- never develop a faster xD-card. There is only Olympus and Fuji who support this kind of card, and in their newer models I think xD will be discontinued.

For underwater use you may want to consider: The Olympus housing has a port with a thread (46mm), and you can easily find add-on lenses (wide angle and macro) and even simple diopters (+10) for your first steps in macro - 2 EUR at ebay!

If you want to spend a "little" extra money (180 EUR) you can buy the Heinrichs-Weikamp converter OLY-PT-N2 and connect an external strobe directly to the Olympus housing. When using this combo, you have to turn off the camera's internal strobe, so this also gives you a better battery life in your SP 350. And, of coure, an external strobe is much more versatile.
(see HeinrichsWeikamp GbR)

Bottom line: I cannot comment on the G9, but the SP 350 is for sure not a bad choice if you see the whole system. If you mainly want to capture fast swimming subjects and if you need a fast recycle time, you may wish to go for the G9 or its competitors.

Just my opinion, regards

Joerg

For the amount of diving I do (too little) I would keep the SP-350. If I were to increase my diving opportunities, yet wanted to maintain the compactness of a P&S camera vs. a DSLR system, I would consider going to a G-9. You will have a faster focusing camera with a better lens and faster RAW processing.

Given how short the product cycles are in the digital camera industry these days, you may just want to hold on for the next, next best thing.

I just got an E-510 for a topside trip to Alaska. My wife has a bad idea about where this will lead and it involves Ikelite.

Just bought that camera for my wife as well. I've got the manly E410...haha.

Probably will almost give away the older camera & pay 'new' top dollar money for the Canon so I would guess most would not...........

I had the sp-350 and loved it. I replaced it with a G9 when the flash died on it. They both have their plusses and minuses, at first I preferred the 350 over the G9, but now that I'm used to the G9 I'll happily stick with it. Faster, better video, a bit more pop in the flash, and the battery lasts WAY longer for me. If choosing between the two I'd go with the G9, if I had a working 350 I'm not sure if I'd upgrade 'til the 350's got problems though.
