I have G10 Canon, WP-DC 28 for almost six months, giving them use very often, I would say that five times a week. I have no complaints. The first month I used just the internal flash and diffuser. But an external strobe will change completely the photos.

Look at the photos I have. Some of them only with internal flash and diffuser.

Have a good holiday.

OK, i went for it and ordered today!

Underwater Case from Helix - $179
Canon G10 from Buydig - $457

I also ordered x2 Class 6 16g cards and the weights for the housing...now, i'm broke :)

Any recommendations when using the camera? (i also ordered a book from Amazon specifically on the G10 and using it to its full potential)

What is the diffuser use for? Is that the large plastic cover that comes with the case?

Yes ... someone mentioned earlier a "shadow" that one gets when using the internal flash. The diffuser removes that shadow by putting the effective lighting surface out closer to the end of the lens.

If you are shooting with the internal flash, you should ALWAYS use the diffuser.

What Bob said. Recommendations? Yep, read the manual, practice, learn the camera a bit first then learn to use it in the housing. Then go dive. Oh wait. You're broke. Oh well...

Check back in after you've played w/ it a while and have some specific questions, it really isn't that tough to run it--you'll do fine. Have fun! // ww

Personally I preferr having 1 card for each dive. Not because Ill fill them up on one dive, but because its a bit less hassle for my workflow. Im trying to arrange pics after date and dive and thats a bit easier if I dont have to look at times and stuff rather than just stuff in "card 1" and put it in the "dive 1" folder.. On atleast 2 different, independent harddrives.

I just take a picture of my fin on my safety stop after my first dive, this tells me the end of a dive and separates it from the next. I also categorize my photos based on date and location/reef/wreck.

got it... :)

I rushed delivered the camera which will give me exactly one week to play with it above and below water before my liveaboard.

Good idea with the photo of the fin for separation, I'm going to have to setup a system.

Not a bad idea. However it still involves more looking around than sticking the memory card into the laptop and dragging ALL the files to one folder.
Im just that lazy :p

One draw back, if you purchase the canon housing you cannot use manual mode as there is no control for the wheel. The wheel control apperture and shutter speed. This for me is a massive oversight from Canon.

Not true.
Push the "Shortcut" button and then press the 4 buttons around the control dial "Wheel" to use functions that are available by rotating the 'wheel'.

This link shows it a bit better
