My son and i are planning a dive trip to Cancun Mexico, Any tips, advice, pros-cons. Is it an awesome place to dive! any input would be great. This is our first tropical dive we have ever done, we are northwest divers so pretty excited for warm water. Thanks to all

So close to Cozumel, but not.

How definite is Cancun ? Diving is so much better at Cozumel if you're willing to consider it. Even if you are flying into Cancun, it's worth the short trip to Cozumel, especially if you are coming primarily to dive.

It all depends on what your expectations are and your experiences are. I would never call the diving in Cancun awesome if I'm comparing it to other places in the Caribbean, but if you've never dived any other tropical locations you should find it a new and pleasant experience. Once you dive some other tropical locations you'll likely see Cancun differently then you will this first experience.

I don't know how comfortable you are in the water, but perhaps you might like to experience a Cenote dive. The crystal clear water and the way the light dances in the openings is breathtaking at some of them around there. I think everyone should give it a shot at least once. As for the open ocean, it is not a horrible dive by any means, but there are significantly more active ecosystems in Cozumel. The walls there are just teaming with life. No matter what the water is warm and the sun is shining so you'll love it! As for a tip, I would recommend that you hook up with Alex at Coconut Divers if you haven't already chosen a dive operation. Coconut Divers Cancun - Scuba Diving in Cancun I've used them for years and would highly recommend them!

If you decide on Cozumel, try Aldora Divers. They are fantastic, run small boats (6 max I believe) and use 100 or 120hp steel tanks. You will get plenty of quality attention along with plenty of bottom time. We dived with them in February and they were one of the best operators we have used anywhere. Liang and Pepe are great DMs and guides. Note that Cozumel can have strong currents, so if you are not used to that type of diving, let then know and they will put you on a beginner boat to visit less "ripping" sites. As for Cancun, never dived there yet...probably because never been disappointed in Coz.

Plans are not definite! As i read through this forum i see Cozumel is the way to go, It sounds like there is a ferry to the mainland so we can explore when not diving. Any dive shop or boat you can recommend? Thanks

How strong? I'm 58 and in fairly good shape! my son should have no problem. Thanks for info on Aldora Divers we will check them out. We are planing our trip in February 2015 so have lots of time to research, Can you tell me how far in advance we need to reserve a dive tour? Thanks

Successful diving in current means you're drift diving, (diving with the current, using it to transport yourself with minimal effort and live boating - meaning the boat follows the divers on the surface and picks them up at the end of the dive)

While I think it's a valuable asset and a life-saving choice in diving to be in good shape, I'm just pointing out that drift diving done properly is easier on the body than any other type of diving you can do. You go with the current you do not fight it. People who drift dive take on the drift diver posture which is arms crossed, barely moving the entire dive, they move in slow motion the entire dive and enjoy long bottom times due to not expending much energy.

Not long likely, not sure exactly. Give them a call or shoot an email to reserve your spot. They have a handful of boats, so you may just schedule when you arrive (which I don't recommend).
