I recently got a cheap set of conshelf XII regs and have been told they are still servicable and that they are as good a reg as many of the new ones available. I just don't like the feel of the second stage in my mouth - the exhaust part (I don't know the proper name of it) pushes onto my chin and its fairly uncomfortable. Is it an option to change the second stage only? It seems that second stages are always sold with a first stage, can you get a second stage on its own? While I am asking so may questions, what is the difference between a primary second stage and an occy second stage apart from the colour - could I just use an occy second stage as my primary?

Yes, you can buy a second stage. You might even be able to fix the problem with yours; why don't you post a photo? There are some regulars on this forum who are very familiar with the old conshelfs.

I don't have my reg with me right now but it looks pretty much the same as this one which is a conshelf xiv its the black exhaust manifold thing that pushes on my chin. There is nothing wrong with the second stage its just the setup doesn't suit my face - maybe my chin is too big. And you don't want a photo of that. Maybe a mouthpiece that makes the reg a little further from my face might work - just thinking out loud.

Hope that picture link worked, thanks for the fast response too.

There are a couple of things you could try before getting a new 2nd.
Make sure that the exhaust T isn't the wrong way up.....they can be rotated without being removed from the body.
You should also try a different mouthpiece that is longer....it will give your chin more room.

Yeah I did spin the T over and it gave me a bit more room but not enought to make it comfortable. I haven't had them serviced yet and I've got two options:
1. Service this old set of regs and get a comfortable mouthpiece etc - some people love this type of reg and say they breathe as good as any expensive new reg set.
2. Just go out and buy a nice new set and put the money I would spend on servicing and replacing one or two hoses and a mouthpiece towards that. It's not really the money more a question of if the old one works perfectly fine (when serviced etc) why change it?
Any opinions?
