thanks, not labeling anyone DIR or not since they cannot be clear about who is and who isn't either. Is Z knife a design style or brand? I have the little Halcyon knife on the webbing that I use to snag the long hose. maybe I should take it out and look at it.

Z-Knife might be a brand, but I was referring to the general design.

It's a hook-shaped knife where the blade is recessed inside the plastic hook.

nice, very small. I actually got up and went and looked at my knife for the first time. I have carried it for a couple years and realized I had no idea what kind of edge it has. it is serrated on one side and has a blunt tip. Pretty sharp. Is the tip to use as a screwdriver, or what? looks like what I need to tighten the camera to the housing.
I did get entangled in kelp once. With a buddy who was nowhere in sight I might add. very elastic that stuff.

Kelp is very strong that way, but snaps when bent at a sharp angle
I like the shoulder mount for the small one ...
I think I will have to get one, probably the big one as thick gloves would make the small one hard to hold for me (last thing you want is trying to fiddle with something like that if you need it)

Your knife ... might want to test just how sharp it is, thought mine was with my thumb, but when trying to cut something, found it was not.. fixed that with the round knife sharpener in the kitchen (because of serrated blade)
Good use for that blunt tip on your knife, I think the main reason is that you do not want a sharp tip that could puncture something important by accident

with respect to knives of any type, many fishing leaders can either be braided metal of one type or another (e.g. stainless steel leaders) and/or monofilament lines are being produced that are significantly more robust than earlier lines and gill nets. Spiderwire comes to mind. They are polymer-based, but some have kevlar and similar compounds in them.

The point is that given the amount of stretch a long line allows, and given the often extremely limited reach that an entrapped or entangled diver has available to them, knives of any sort simply don't cut very well. Shears are often much more effective.

Oh I agree, I will be getting shears and I am replacing my small BC knife (maybe keep it) and getting a Z-Knife too ...
You need both, a cutting tool and shears , imo and I think my rescue class advocated the same thing

i can reach the shears with my left hand, but it takes me about thirty seconds
or so to undo the pocket velcro and get my fingers on them. mostly, this
is difficulty with opening the velcro pocket. it comes right off with my
right hand.

You might try finding spots where they can both be reached with both hands. Like on your BC shoulder straps, hoses or anywhere it fits your needs.

Good thought, Gary. I keep my shears in my left pocket, and I really don't know easy it would be to get to them with my right hand. I'm going to have to re-think this.

My knife is on my waist strap where I can get it with my teeth.
