Can cheap fibre optic cables do the work fine?

You can easily coil them yourself (wrap around a pencil then heat with hair dryer or in hot water). The L connector is $4 from Divervision. I make specific cables for specific uses (like very short ones for macro shooting, or very long ones for use with a snooted strobe) but commercial ones do work well.

I didn't know you could bend them with hair dryer useful to know
I guess all is possible with a bit of super glue and the right tools
It depends on the ability to make repairs if something happens when you are on a trip same applies if you had to snap a commercial cable too
 
Cables and connectors can also be found at B&HPhoto although they probably are not as inexpensive as the previous ideas. They are still by far less expensive than the SEA&SEA or Olympus cables. Look under the Underwater/Power and connections links.
