They are usually solitary but this Spring I saw closeup a school of 20-30 of them tightly swarming in one area. Don't know if breeding or feeding but was very cool.

This behavior is cause for grave alarm. This rarely seen and elusive denizen of the Sea exhibits this kind of marauding, schooling behavior and has been known to attack lone divers. This is why the buddy system was originally invented.

They are also attracted to split fins.
