ive been looking at the go pros but thats about all i see out there. was wondering if there is any other competition or something that would give the go pro a run for its money.

Not for $550. Except the Sony or the Contour. Neither has the options the GoPro does - esp. the LCD viewscreen.

Action Cam | Mountable Full HD Action Camcorder | Sony USA
Contour, Action Video Evolved | HD Helmet Cameras & Accessories | Contour

Some of the P&S still cameras do 1080P video now so one of them housed might be under $550 - I don't follow that market.

This one caught my eye recently - there's a thread about it in the photography forum. http://www.opticaloceansales.com/ho...1-camera-pt-ep06-housing-zoom-gear-combo.html One limitation seems to be that the internal flash won't work properly.

Since you're looking for a camera/camcorder that may be a better choice. I don't know about the Contour but the Sony only shoots 2MP stills. The better Hero's are 11 or 12MP.

Intova is about to come out with an upgrade to the Sport Pro in the next few days. The sport pro is a great little camera...especially for the price. I am curious to see the details on the new version. It is a definite attempt to go after the go pro market.

I'm in the same boat, I'm new to diving and will probably only do one trip a year, so I'm actually hoping to spend $200 or less on a camera. I've been looking for used gopro's, but the Sony caught my eye because of the claims of better low light performance. Their website doesn't say much about using it for diving though. Still leaning towards the gopro, mainly because I can strap it to my wrist! I had an original gopro hero on a wrist mount for my first couple dives, got some great shots of a wreck but the shots of fish and turtles were very poor. Then the case leaked (my fault for not taking the best care of it) and it was ruined, but hey, I got it used for $80 and the wreck pics alone were worth it.

For your budget, the GoPro is the clear choice. It shoots amazingly good video considering it's size and cost.

It's popularity has created many options with accessories that might be available for other cameras. There are also a ton of users who can share their first hand experience. If you have a question about the GoPro, odds are someone on the internet had the same question and the answer is a google search away. The GoPro section on this board is very active with tons of advice and tips.

You might consider starting with a Canon Power-shot and Canon housing for less than $400 total... then add a tray and lights later. You definitely want a system with an LCD display that will shoot macro and also will auto focus while zooming. This system does all that. The underwater shots on my video link below start at about the 2:30 mark. Shot in Bonaire this past May. Anyway, that's what I use..
