I have been diving for about 2 years. I just got all new gear and I want to dial everything in before I go to the ocean. I am going to try and get as close as I can in a pool then be ready to add a little when in the ocean.

I go crazy on my weighting. 3mil, 7 mil, drysuit, LP80, HP 80, HP 100, Al 80, fresh water, salt water, and I lost 50 lbs last year. If it were not for my dive log with weight info I would go crazy.

No old steel 72?

I know the feeling.

I may be old but I'm not dead yet.

If you are going to wear the same gear all you need to do is get your total weight in fresh water (you and everything you are wearing) then add 2.6% of the total.
All you need to account for is the density difference in the water. (fresh 62.4lb/cft vs salt 64lb/cft)
64 divided by 62.4= 1.02564 so I rounded to 2.6% It should be very close to what you need.

So just to make sure I have this right. If I weigh 320 total and I am weighted correctly for fresh water I would need to add 8.32 lbs for salt.

320 x .026 = 8.32 then add that to the 320 total of the fresh water weight for a total of 328lbs for salt

Weird. Have you figured out why the same weight with nothing vs. wetsuit? Can't see how that could be. How thick is your NY wetsuit? Do you use a body suit in Bonaire? In NS I use 35-40 lbs. with 7 mil farmer john and when I was in Panama 10-12 with the body suit. In NY in the summer 18 lb.s with my shorty (all salt water of course).

I know exactly why. I dive a 3mm full suit with a 3mm vest up here using steel tanks. My hood is 5mm but gloves & boots are 2.5-3mm. I add polyolefin (no buoyancy) underneath as needed. It really keeps the weight I need up here very low (12#-14#). If I was wearing 7mm or more I'd need considerably more weight. If I remember correctly, I needed 26# with a 7mm fullsuit and an Al-80 with 5mm boots & gloves. Way too much lead to carry into and out of the water. Why I started find ways to cut it to a minimum.

In the Caribbean I use no insulation and no bodysuit. A speedo (covered with nylon soccer shorts - I wouldn't subject anyone to that image) and a nylon T-shirt. The Al-80's are a bit more buoyant than the steel's I use in fresh water and you need a bit more weight in salt so it evens out. Last time on Bonaire my weight was perfect at 12#. I could hover in any position, even verticle with my head down. Loved pretending to be a trumpet fish - lol.

assuming the 320 lbs is you and all your gear, then yes, you'd need an extra 8ish pounds for salt water.

Yes that is correct as long as you are wearing the same gear.
