We have been many places some where "tipping is not the custom" but I have NEVER had anyone who gave us good service turn it down. We have always had great service on the live-aboards we have been on and typically tip 10-15% the price of the trip, per person.

I was on the Nimrod last May, and nobody put info about tipping on the board.....

We just got back from a 3 day 2 night trip out of Cairns on one of the Scubapro boats. At the end of the trip, we tipped the Captain like we have on all other liveaboards, figuring he'd dole it out among the crew. He was genuinely surprised at getting the tip.

Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated! Fantastic news that we can avoid the additional cost of 20% in tips as is standard in the US of A.

As I understand it, mandatory tipping comes from a wage structure that includes the projected tips. In Australia, our wages do not factor in any tips and hence base salary is the total salary.

Anyone who tries to fool a tourist in Australia into paying a mandatory tip is a disgrace to all Aussies. On behalf of all Australian I apologise to any tourists who have been taken advantage of.

totally agree

People here in California expect a tip for doing what they are already being payed to do. It is very annoying to me. I am a union carpenter and receive a nice wage for doing my job well, no way would I EVER expect or accept a tip from a customer.
