I am a certified scuba driver since 2007. I have about 40 logged dives and got my certification from the YMCA. I usually only go on about 2 diving trips per year. I booked a family vacation in Gulf Shores area and am now currently there & was planning to go diving this week. The night before leaving, I realized I couldn't find my YMCA certification card. The local dive shop in the Gulf Shores area won't allow me to dive with them without it (understandably) & unless I can show proof.

I have seen an online form that seems to allow me to order a new card, but it looks like it will take about 2 weeks to get a new one from them. Is there any other way I an show proof to the dive shop about my certification? I have my full dive log book, but they won't accept this either. Any other suggestions?

Call and see if they'll fax or email to the dive shop?

The Y is out of the SCUBA business. They will apparently send you a new card if you request one, but that won't help you on this trip.

You could try calling them and see if they can talk to the dive shop or fax or email them a copy.

Do you have a local dive shop you do business with (tank fills, service, etc.)? They might have a copy of your card.

Also, your logbook might contain a temporary C card (I know SSI does). You might also try another shop. If you have your log book, someone else might cut you some slack.

SSI has an "experienced diver program" Although I've never done one, I believe you just need to take the test and do the OW dives from the class. If you do this, you'll end up with an SSI OW card.

Not sure if any of this helps. Sorry to hear about your problem.

flots.

the one bigger dive shop I tried here (Down Under Dive) won't accept just my log book. I suggested to maybe have some sort of C card verification faxed this week, but the person I talked to claimed they don't have a fax machine either. If I can contact someone this week about it & this is possible, I am sure there might be another way to send it to them (email) so we'll see.

Yea, I realize the Y is out of the Scuba certification business. I thought about trying to call another dive shop in this area and ask if they would accept my dive log (with dive shop stamps), but not really seeing any other dive places here that will allow me to get on board a charter AND rent all my equipment like I was going to do with this dive under place.

Ultimately, I think I can get a replacement card, but that probably won't help me this week while I am down here. Depending on the cost, the mentioned SSI alternative might be another way of doing it too. Will see.

Thanks for the feedback though.

I might be able to get you an SEI card if you know your ymca cert number. Or call SEI hq and ask to speak to Santyna. Tell her Jim Lapenta said to call. And they have a fax machine. She might not be able to help without yoir ymca cert number. Who was your instructor?

Mcf57,

Down Under is the only combination shop & charter in Gulf Shores. The Reef Dive Shop is next door in Orange Beach, and their Facebook page says they are a full service shop & charter. I have no personal experience with The Reef, but I would expect them to require a C-Card just the same.

Hope you get it sorted out!

Fax is becoming less common and often replaced by emailing a PDF. See if SEI can send this to your destination dive shop.
