My guess is the same Grouper that I have written about in the past.

When I was in a small dive group about to exit a big square hole in the side of the Wreck, we passed a fair sized Grouper hanging back in the shadows. As we exited the Wreck, the "bait ball" parted like the Red Sea allowing us passage. After I got outside, I turned around to get a picture of the English guy behind me (David maybe?) I line up a shot and I was about to snap a picture of him coming through the hole, when a streak of dark heat shot out of the opening, gulping a bunch of the bait fish. My eyes were as big as dinner plates. Of course the English guy didn't see the Grouper, but he saw my eyes, and that semi-freaked him out, wondering what was right behind him. He turned around to see what had surprised me so much. Here was the Grouper cruising contently back into the dark confines of the wreck. It passed casually less than a foot from him after he had turned around. It acted as if we didn't even exist.

Of course the "bait ball" is always fun to play with, like a wall of liquid mercury. When faced with the dilema of trying to stay away from the divers, and trying to stay inside the Wreck, they hesitated for a moment at the edge of light at the opening. The Grouper had learned to follow the divers and make a meal of the conflicted fish.

Too bad I was too freakin' lame to get a shot of it! (I think I might have a shot of the Grouper himself somewhere)

I really enjoyed diving the C-53 Wreck!

Oh man... That must have been awesome. I feel so deprived. We didn't get to see the grouper, only saw a couple of nurse sharks on the reefs, and one eagle ray. I suspect that the various fish somehow sensed that Wilma was coming, and high-tailed it for deeper waters. What do you think?

I have a few shots from the C-53 from just before Wilma. There is a picture of the 'bait ball', one of the coolest things I saw. I was outside watching them come out and go in. It was so mesmerizing I didnt even think to take any video. There is also a picture of the large grouper in the shadows. And that is me waving from the bridge and upside down.

I would really like to see some post-Wilma pictures of the C-53.

Boy, are you in for a treat ! It is amazing how beaing at 100' is different in clear Cozumel waters than it is in a lake. I'll be there myself March 5th.

You will enjoy it thoroughly. My wife and I will be there the same time...going thru Blue Angel and staying at Caribe Blu. We have been there many times and never get tired of it. I was diving in the lake (under some ice) just 2 days ago and now can't wait for the complete 360 of diving experience.

Who are you diving with? If you haven't booked, consider Blue Angel. They are really great, as are many of the operators on the island.

Thanks Nevis Diver and jjwdiver! We are staying at a private B&b and diving with Albatross charters.
Ice diving - never catch me doing that. I hate the cold. lol
Hopefully this damn cold I cought will be gone by then. I got the whole head stuffed up issues and I have coughed so hard I hurt my back last night. It just has to clear up by the 30th or I wont be diving. :(

We are staying at a private B&b .....

The next time I come to Cozumel (after March 5) I am going to go that route. I look forward to hearing about how it went.

A couple of friends and I met up with a guy named David who worked at a shop on one of the walkways that goes NE from the square. They were closed but gave us margaritas for free one evening and hurried us inside their place when the mosquito sprayer was coming by. The shop was a kind of snack place that opened to the street and right next to it, joined by a common entrance was their shop that had dinnerware, glasses and things. Pretty nice stuff....they had some margarita glasses that were hand painted and were from somewhere in Mexico, very cool. They were a husband and wife team....she was American and from Colorado, I think.

Anyway, this guy, David was working for them and he spent the evening with us. He said he could hook us up with a really nice private residence and he would cook for us (He said he was a trained chef). He was Mexican, very light skinned, but spoke English very well. The price was close to what we pay at Hotel Cozumel, so I will look him up in March and see what gives.

He had some pretty wild stories about things...many things. This guy is either a very well connected individual or totally full of crap....either way it was a great evening.

Come to think of it, when we went into Neptuno after midnight with him the place was packed, very few, if any tables available. He seemed to know everyone and when he spoke to one of the folks working there, not the owner, after a minute or so we were escorted to a completely cleared table right next to the packed dance floor.....interesting.

Talk about rambling....back to the point of looking frorward to hearing about your B & B....which, if you don't know, is very good, warmed, by a fire in the winter.

I will give a full report after we return. I know the B&B is in the Corpus Christi Neighborhood. Albatross Charters hooked us up with them. We will be the only guest there as the residence has 3 buildings. One building is the owners private rooms and the other is the guest bed and bath. The other building is the common area with kitchen washer dryer tv room. And they have a pool. It sounds wonderful and from what I understand the owners are really great hosts. But for sure I will give a full report about that as well as our diving and and other experiences. We are also taking a tour to the north lighthouse by boat with Adrian (owner of Especias restaraunt). Unfortunaly though he informed me that Especias will not open till some time after we are already gone Have heard wonderful things about it.
