I'm a Fish!
My lds is selling some of there rental regs pretty cheap. Im sure that they are pretty banged up on the outside. I was planning on getting two regs and getting them serviced. Can regs last forever if they are serviced regularly? Should I be concerned that they were rental regs?

My regs. were rental gear. I get them serviced every so often. They have been no problems with them I would do it again if need be.

I think that's a great way to purchase a used reg guaranteed to work without investing anymore money up-front, i.e., getting it inspected/overhauled. In addition, your LDS should have no issue servicing those regs going forward. You may want to ask them whether they might cut you a deal on reg overhaul parts in the future, since you'd have to pay for those out-of-pocket (only customers buying a new reg from an authorized dealer are eligible to participate in the free-parts-for-life programs, when available).

Rental regs get used pretty hard, but the LDS will typically overhaul them every few months. Then, after a season or two, the shop will usually sell them off. You can be fairly certain that the reg model is a robust one (easy to service, not prone to breaking, resistant to freeflow, remains in tune, etc.).

No reason at all not to use them, while the outside gets beat up, all the internal parts that wear/age are replaced during service. Basically, when properly serviced you have a new reg inside, reguardless of what it looks like outside. The one possible exception is the hoses and they are easy to replace if necessary. My 1958 DA Aquamaster is older then half the divers on the board and it's still going strong.

Regs can outlast the diver, the diver's kids, and maybe even their grandkids if the regs are properly cared for, and parts are still available. Rental regs do see a lot of use and abuse. The price should reflect that. In other words a REALLY good deal.... used regs typically do not hold their value that well, just check the prices on ebay for almost-new regs. But as already mentioned, buying used from your LDS will help establish a good relationship...

Best wishes.

I haven't seen a rental make/model I would like to own new, let alone used.

Would you buy a used rental car?

If the engine, transmission and the rest of the dive train has been replace with new and I can get it at 1/4 of what a new once cost, you better believe it, I don't care the paint has some scratches on it......lets talk apples and apples. The outside of the reg or it's age have nothing at all to do with it's internal condition and the internal condition of the reg is what counts.

Servicing does not mean every single component gets replaced brand new as per your car fairy tale. If it did, it would not be at ¼ of the price. Please compare apples with apples.

Regs can last forever even if they are rarely serviced. But you probably will not be able to dive them until they are serviced. But where are you finding a rental S600 or A700?
