Hi
Has anyone ever tried buying online (from diveiin, for example) from Canada. How does it work with customs fees, taxes, etc? Do you end up paying more or still pays off?

Yes, I've bought stuff from various shops in Canada. There is no duty on scuba equipment bought in Canada. Well, at least there wasn't the last time I bought stuff from Canada.

Good luck,

Mike

Plenty of our members have bought from Canada. Our shop is run by DiveInn and around 10% of our orders have currently come from Canada.

Import duty will be your biggest concern. It currently runs around 25% of the total cost of the product (i.e. product + shipping) but your best bet is to check with the staff in the store first - DiveInn/DB Shop are brilliant - they answer questions from people all over the world.

Are you guys based in the US? The last I heard, there wasn't a duty on scuba gear (specifically scuba gear) to the US. As of a couple years ago, this was the case and was shown in the customs book they have at the border. I've never paid a duty on scuba gear that I bought in Canada -- about a $1000 dollars worth. You can even get one of those taxes back if you spend more than $200 (something like that).

Joey - I just recieved my Apeks reg from DiveInn - Tuesday I got a call from a shipping broker, and was told duty charges would be mailed to me. I don't know how much duty will be (my order was $300 USD)........ I'll update you when I get the bill.

The taxman is always lurking around the corner............

Hi,
I've ordered a ton of stuff from the US (most not scuba though). Thanks to NAFTA of 99% of stuff you order from the US, there is no customs fees. All you will have to pay is GST + a GST collection fee. What the GST collection fee is depends on who does the shipping. If its USP, the fee is $5, if its Fedex, or UPS its around $25. This collection fee is levied unless the value of the shipment is less than $20. So you have to be careful. If you order $25 worth of stuff, it could cost you $50 + GST + shipping.

When shipping other coutries other than the US, you call call Canada Customs with the exact details and they'll tell you what if any the duties are.

The deal is if the merchandise was manufactured in the U.S. there are NO duties on upon entry to Canada. Your provincial tax and GST do apply though.

If the gear is manufactured outside of the US (EG: Suunto dive computers made in Finland) it is subject to any applicable duties. The percentage can be found out by calling Canada Customs and Revenue or you might want to dig through their website but I prefer a live brain where my wallet is concerned.
