Apologies if this ground has been gone over before: I did a quick search and found a few threads from last year and earlier but I was hoping for some up to date advice!

A friend and I are flying into KL or (less likely) Singapore in July before heading off for a spot of diving. Now, my friend has got his eye on the Suunto D9 and I'm quite interested in upgrading my gecko to the D6 and I was wondering what the chances were of picking up a bargain in the region. We're coming from the UK where the prices include a 17.5% sales tax so I'm guessing we can a bit of discount on what we'd pay here.

Given flight schedules it looks like we'll be doing a brief overnight stop-off in whichever gateway city we use before heading out to Tioman or somesuch (but that's another thread...:05: ) so I figure we can find any given place in the evening. But, if that's what we're doing I'd like to check that they have them in stock and ready to go!

Any good recommendations? Email address's, that sort of thing?

Generally, it is cheaper in Singapore, but I can't give a ballpark number. Maybe other forummers can help on this one.

I'm not sure if the D6 is out yet in Singapore. As for the D9, I was quoted abt S$1,900 (can't remember if this was with the transmitter) by Sea-Land Sport located in the basement of Lucky Plaza, Orchard Road.

On the other hand, there is also a fellow Boarder, Jason Ooi, who can offer special prices for both the D6 and D9. You may wish to PM him to find out more.

Hope this helps! ;)

At the recent dive expo here in Singapore, the D6 was offered by Renscuba (Tel: 6293 5418) at S$1,100 or US$700. It pays to shop around tho, a lot of the dive shops here do very good deals. There is a 5% value added tax which is refundable at the airport.

hi CJ, as per the earlier posts, the dive stores are pretty much centered around 2 places in Singapore; Lucky Plaza mall (2 shops in basement level) or the Concourse building (3 stores) + a few others around the island. My recommendation for the Suunto is either call up Renscuba (their prices were pretty cheap during the recent Adex dive expo last week) or go to the Lucky Plaza store.. remember to bargain though.. and yes; you can also claim back the 5% goods tax at the airport when u're leaving. Remember to get the receipt + the GST refund form & when u're at the airport ask the check-in staff where the GST refund counter is; its easy to spot. 5% returned off say $1500 is still quite a bit of money.. :-)

Thanks, some valuable feedback there: I found Waikiki divers and emailed them for a quote, which came in at $1750 for the D9 + transmitter on a cash-only-no-tax deal. They said the D6, which only came out this month, wasn't available for six months.

Oh, and call me Bill, the CJ bit is part of an old old nickname that kind of stuck as a internet tag.

good price

hi Bill, i recommend you check around for prices from the lucky plaza stores, Renscuba, Friendly Waters & a couple others you might find via google, cos so far i've never gotten the lowest prices from the store you mentioned.. eg: mares V32 reg set; they quoted me their lowest figure of S$670, but i got it for S$580 at another place.. no disrespect meant; they sell lots of good stuff & its a great store to visit, just that when it comes down to the dollars & cents.. well u know what i mean.. :-)

Bill
