I bought my gear before getting certified, as I knew I would love SCUBA and after devouring the SB equipment forums for several months, I knew what type of gear would take me in the direction I wanted to go... So I picked up my BP/Wing and regs - trained in them (other than the first 2 checkout dives) and have been thrilled with my decision. However there is a great deal to be said for trying gear first... in the end the decision is yours alone to make - Have fun on the journey...

Aloha, Tim

I was certified about 2 years ago before going on a dive trip. I rented gear for a couple local dives before I went away and rented gear while I was there. The winter came and passed and so did the summer with me doing very few local dives.

I went away again and used rental equipment which wasn't the greatest. It was in relatively poor condition.

I've since purchased my own gear and have been diving locally on many occasions with more to come.

My point being, renting is a pain. You don't get the same equipment and if it's not from your LDS who know's what you're going to get. You'll dive a lot more if you have your own equipment.

Having your own equipments is much more fesible than renting in the long run. You can save a whole of cash with your own equipments compared with renting the LDS equipments, and it is a whole lot safer. Yes,it will hurt when you part with your money at one go,but you make it up with a number of dive trips and trust me,it is worth the money.

On top of the fact you will probably save money in the long run, you'll see that'll you'll dive a LOT more often...

Isn't that the whole point??? :D

My wife and I own all of our own gear and it's a great motivator to get out and dive frequently. I am also more comfortable diving because I know my gear like the back of my hand. That makes things easier for me if I'm in a low-viz situation...blah blah blah.

The only downside to the argument is because I'm a gadget freak AND married...I have almost been banned from going to our LDS...y'all can figure out why.
