Maybe they intend for the faceplate to come off and for the gas to escape that way?

The faceplate would have to be fairly fragile to do that in a safe, reliable manner. Those littleb rubber plugs are designed to fail safely. No dangerous fragments.

I have a small button gauge on my pony, and I like it, but I'll probably swap it out for a 2" spg. My OCD alarm goes off whenever I look at the button gauge because I have to screw it in completely to get a good seal with the oring, but this results in the gauge oriented upside down from my perspective, and that drives me crazy! lol
