Butt dump valve on wing...why is it on the underside?

Just got my first BP/W setup and took it in the pool tonight. I am trying to understand why the dump valve is on the side of the wing facing down when trimmed out horizontally....it seems to make more sense for the butt dump to be on the side of the wing facing upwards. I know this is not unique to the wing I purchased as I have seen it on other brands as well.

Can anyone please explain?

It's easier to reach, especially when dealing with multiple cylinders and a long hose tucked behind the wing. Also, it allows a more controlled release of gas, regulated by your trim and how much you lift the dump up when you pull the string, so you can make small buoyancy adjustments rather than dumping everything.
 
If you watch a wing it tends to wrap around a tank like a taco allowing the dump valve to face somewhat upward. At this point it really doesn't matter which side it is on. In addition, a dump valve that is facing below will be tucked in rather than on top allowing it to snag on something.

The other reasons listed above play a role, especially ease of reach.
 
I just wish they would put them on the side opposite of the inflator hose.

If my left hand is occupied, my right hand can't help.

my dive rite travel wing has it on the right. It's really annoying actually. Practical reasons for it on the left are primarily so you can use it while on the trigger on a dpv *i.e. right hand drive, left hand buoyancy*, while sharing air, same concept there. If you have them on opposite sides, you have to swap hands for buoyancy control. On the DPV it's just annoying, but in an OOA scenario, when you start sharing air, you are horizontal, but at some point you go vertical and need to use your left hand for buoyancy control. In that situation you would have to swap hands that you are using to control the other diver. Very annoying.

To Tobin's point, it is on the diver side. If it was on the other side, it would be against your tank when in horizontal trim and you'd have to reach around the wing. Not gonna happen when it's fully inflated
 
Funny, I had the exact opposite question when I purchased a Zeagle ET. Zeagle puts the dump valves on the "outside as Tobin calls it" of the wing.
