I am working on acquiring and setting up my own gear as I finsih my OW pool sessions in preparation for a trip to the Keys to finish the OW dives. So I have a question about the bungied backup around the neck. I've noted most of the regs\octo's I've used (class and 3 resort course dives) seem to freeflow when the mouthpiece is vertical/up in the water column. Where does the mouthpeice end up when bungied and does it have a greater tendency to freeflow? Thanx in advance. Jeff

The short answer is No. They don't free flow.

The longer is answer is that the IP and cracking pressure of the reg is set to avoid that. Moreover, my bungied regs (ATX200's on my doubles, ATX50 on my singles) have an adjustment knob and lever that lets me restrict the flow even more.

I'm not a certified reg tech, so I can't tell you the precise settings.

The bungied backup reg sits under your chin, and generally with the mouthpiece pointing up at your mouth. I can't do it, but many divers who rig the backup this way can reach down with their mouth and get the reg without using their hand.

I don't have any problem with my backup freeflowing because the mouthpiece is pointing up. The problems you experienced are more likely due to using class and rental regs that may not be in quite as good shape as they should be.

and it does not freeflow. As Northeastwrecks said, I'm not a reg tech, but I believe that the backup reg is set not to draw as easily as your primary.

It does not freeflow if it is adjusted correctly.

If a reg is set for 1" cracking pressure ( a common enough setting) and it is hanging mouthpiece uppermost round your neck it WILL free flow if the diaphragm end is submerged and the top isnt, like when you jump in from the boat.

If the inside of the reg is flooded with water before the dive there isn't a problem, likewise if you position the reg diaphragm side up before you jump then turn it over once you are submerged.

Cheers, and no charge...

that you need to get the reg tech to listen to you when you tell them this. I've given up with various different techs now and enter with the oct in my mouth and the primary held so it doesn't free flow - my own personal solution.

is quite light and close to free flow. 1.7" would be harder ( but not too bad) to breathe off if it is non adjustable, but would not free flow. an adjustable could be set lower cranked down to not free flow but would have to be cranked back to breathe easier when needed.
