If you follow the popular method of slinging a stage bottle and pressurizing it prior to the dive (and leaving it off until it is needed), what damage can be done to the reg if one were to accidentally bump the second stage and purge the air from the hoses?

about the worst thing that can happen is water can theoretically flow up the hose from the second stage as the ambient pressure exceeds the intermediate pressure.

I have never had this happen though.

It would take a really deep dive to force water all the way up the hose and into the first stage. Until the water gets there, it is not going to do any serious harm.

However, I still will check the button gauges on my deco regs a couple of times during the dive and if they are nearing zero I will crack the valve slightly and re-pressurize the reg.
