Hey! I just got back from dinner with some friends. We had an interesting discussion about aggressive shark behavior. I would like to do a bit of research to try to determine the percentage of shark encounters that include bumps, but not bites.
I'm conducting a poll for now, but would appreciate links to better data.

Ive always been told that if they bump you, expect a bite. For Tigers anyway. We were pinned to tehe bottom for 15 minutes by a 15 foot plus Tiger last fall. What a beauty! Of course, no camera. One of the local diver inst was bumped during a safety stop then bitten last year also.

When I was out diving The Bell off VA Beach a couple years ago the divemaster said he was bumped by a Sand Tiger as he tied us in to the wreck. I was a little nervous about the dive since it was going to be my first dive around sharks.

Overall it was a good dive. Saw about 10 sharks. There were alot more down there but vis was <15 ft.

On the way up the anchor line I was following my buddy and a Sand Tiger came into my view. moving parallel to the line heading straight for my buddy. It was probably 6 feet long and was less than 5 feet away from me. He approached to within 2 feet of my buddys fins and then veered off down into the depths. I thought for sure he was going to take a bite out of him.

My buddy never even saw the shark. I think the shark smelled his goody bag since he had been spear fishing on the previous dive (at another site).

I did a Dive in Key Largo last Aug.
And had a 8' Nurse Shark come to within about 10 feet of me.

one of the most amazzzzzzing things I ever seen
what powerfull animal in two easy sweeps of its tail it was gone.

Sorry done know of any links

I've never seen one yet, but I'm fairly new and have not dove even a 1/4 of the wrecks in the area. I was to dive the Proteus off Hatteras last month, but that was called off due to rough seas. It's close to 130 ft and I was informed that there are a lot of sand tigers usually lazing around on the sand. I was also told that it was sometimes difficult to see the wreck on descent due to huge schools of baitfish swimming about. Apparently there's sand tigers that frequent the wrecks off the Virginia coast as well, but I have yet to see any. I noticed that we seem to have a perfect no-diver-bitten-by-shark record so far (knocking on tank) according to the UFL site. Maybe the cooler water slows down the smaller sharks just enough to think twice before nbbling. :eyebrow:

Got bumped by a small nurse shark because some jackarse decided to touch his tail while I was admiring him sleep. When her rest, she plowed into me. I guess it was more of a collision than a bump, and she was a lot cuter than a bull!
