Are you suffering from narcosis? If this act does not show you who is in charge, then a direct message from god won't help? Go ahead, and plan your next vacation to Tijuana, Mexico. Based on all the posts in this thread, it must be safe down there.....

Yes I'm suffering from narcosis. I've lived in so-cal my entire life and one year took 30 trips to Ensenada without a single incident. The one time I went to TJ something happened. I don't need some fatalist telling me what the dangers are of driving down to Mexico. NO ONE vacations in TJ so get that out of your head. When my new condo is done in Puerta Nuevo I'll continue to go down there and eat fresh lobster off my brand new grill while watching the sunset on my brand new patio on the brand new 4th story. Heck I've got enough bedrooms to potentially put at risk 10 more divers! Just like I drive into LA and Hollywood every day and night, hopefully without incident. You're the OP who obviously has a single sided view that everyone in Baja is evil and you will be robbed and shot dead after an inch of rubber crosses over that border. Live in your shelter my friend, I'll send you video of La Bufadora, and maybe a fragment of one of my langosta tails. Just whatever you do, if you treasure your life at all, DON'T CROSS THAT BORDER!

proves my point another american buying real estate in Rosarito ..good for you. one day the knuckleheads will wake up and ask where did all these gringos come from and why do we have to speak english ...immigration and NAFTA is a two edged sword ...I too plan on owning a piece of Baja ...

If you haven't been down there for a while it's amazing to see the change it's undergoing. It almost seems that it's all under Californian development from the border down to Ensenada.

My family was in town over Labor day ..took my mother to Ensenada via car for the first time in 10 years...wow... I usually just drive my boat to the islands then down to La Salinas then around to La Corral Ensenada ...but by the toll road was just amazing. In ten years Baja north will be just an extension of San Diego County...can't wait. Looking for property in Puerto San Tomas area or further north @ La Salina.

Water is beautiful and the beaches are amazing ...just a matter of time before the rift raft are herded out.

As I understand it, even those lobsters you're planning on cooking on your BarBq are as foreign to Mexico as the Gringos that own the properties. I've heard the lobster have been wiped out of the west coast there for several decades now.

Those PN "bugs" come from Western Australia- the Baja of the Southern Hemisphere- where the "natives" are friendly Aussies and very unlikely to rob you even if you are a surfer! :D

I lived in San Diego from 1958 to 1984. I made my first trip from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas in 1968 (yes, lots of dirt track and slow going!) and went down camping/ fishing/ diving there for several decades without incident- well at least no incidents instigated by any Mexican folks.

What ever your feelings are on this issue- it's very sad that the Baja that Ray Cannon and John Steinbeck described so many years ago is gone.....and of course for the fellow that's bought a piece of Puerto Nuevo- you should have been there in the 60's and 70's- it's sad for me to even hear condo high rises are springing up there- that's "PROGRESS" I guess....and I've never understood that word.

When my family first bought out boat we immediately took it down to La Corral and left it there for about a year (it's considered property after 9 months). This was while the harbor and hotel was still in development and I gotta say back then it was beautiful. I think you've got a great route there.

I've got to be perfectly honest with you, I've never dove in Baja and was just hoping that there will be lobster everywhere. I had no idea they were flown in, how can they afford to sell them for what they do if they're imported? How depressing.

I wish I could have seen it back then, unfortunately I wasn't even a gleam in my parent's eyes. lol For that region I see it as "progress" towards safety, and that's it. If we don't buy it someone else will and I doubt they will be as earthly conscience as we are.

Empty V....As for "cheap lobster" in PN. I don't know what a lobster dinner costs now, but in the early 70's I was in the construction industry. When it was raining we'd head down to PN for lobster and beer for something to do, maybe 6 times a year. Back then, a lobster dinner at one of the restaurants would set you back $3.50 along with all you could eat beans, rice and tortillas.

In the 60's and early 70's there were fewer than 6 restaurants in PN and they really were pulling lobster out of the local waters and not shipping them in from Australia.

As for cheap Aussie lobsters- Western Australia around Geraldton is literally crawling with them- they ship the lobsters all over the world. You'd think they'd be cheap here- nope! You can buy Aussie lobster cheaper in Mexico and the US than here! Go figure.

And as for "progress" towards safety. From what I've been reading- it's getting pretty ugly south of the border...sadly, as three-to four decades ago, travel into Baja was safe- the biggest worry was self- inflicted injury.

But, I hear the "call of Baja" in your writing...it's a magical peninsula if you ignore the human condition.

Try to find an out- of- print book called "God and Mr. Gomez" by Jack Anderson, a deceased columnist from the LA times. It is the story of Anderson's true life adventure of building a home on the coast in Punta China, near PN with a Mexican contractor, Mr. Gomez. It's hilarious. I think you'll appreciate it all the more as you get ready to make your condo purchase down there. I actually met Mr. Gomez years ago- it added to the tale for me.

One other thing- head down to San Quentin (just a few more hours south of you in PN..it's where the highway turns east to head over to the Gulf side), take down your dive gear, hire a local boat and go out and dive the kelp beds outside the harbor- it's a terrific dive and it's a great adventure! To my knowledge, there's no dive operation down there- but it's easy to hire a local fishing boat to take you out.

cheers.
