I could see such a place being useful for training and gaining experience for new divers. However you might have trouble getting enough money from entry fees to pay for it. Also you're talking about an area slightly less than 2.5 acres. It would be hard to keep it interesting. I've been in quarries that are a little larger than that and after a day of diving you've seen it all. Might be hard to keep repeat visitors. I would think that you need to locate in the very large inland metropolitan areas ie Dallas/Ft Worth; Chicago etc. It would be neat if it could be done sucessfully from a business/financial perspective.

as long as we're fantasizing - some have planned for they day when space tourists visit a space hotel in low earth orbit - among other games to play and things to do and would be to scuba in a sphere of water - probably need to use a rebreather since there would unlikely be an air/water interface and if ya make any bubbles they aint going 'up'

-in fact now that i think about it - there would probably have to be a 'lock-in' chamber with a volume reservoir to compensate for each diver's displacement - or else an expandable bubble structure...

is the architectural firm in japan with plans for the space hotel listening?

Waterlover:
That is an amazing web site you found. It's everything that has been said. Seems the first one is to open in England, with more on the way.
It's a great idea. Where do I sign?

For sure a great idea...and great plan !

As WaterLover mentioned it is already designed and now build in England with plans for many more "Subsea Resorts" around the world...It is really interesting to check the species that they will have ! even sharks !
There are a lot of info and presentations in the site but here is an extract:

Sub Sea Explorer is currently developing the first Sub Sea Resort. At Subsea Resorts divers will have the opportunity to sample warm-water diving in their own country. However, this is no mere giant swimming pool, but a massive marine habitat in which underwater adventurers will be able to swim among shoals of tropical fish and enjoy close encounters with sharks, rays and other amazing creatures.

The first Sub Sea Resort will be constructed in England, but this is simply the keystone for a further 23 such resorts, which will be built throughout mainland Europe and the United States of America. The Sub Sea Resort is aimed at anyone with an interest in the undersea world. Children will be able to enjoy snorkelling trips, beginners can become certified divers, and experienced divers can explore the reefs and wrecks that will fill this marine wonderland. Even non-divers are more than welcome, and they will find plenty of land-based activities to keep them occupied

Learn to Dive in warm tropical water
With Marine Life such as Sharks and Rays
Leisure Complex for non Diving Partner
Kids Snorkel Programmes

Experienced Divers will have the opportunity to Practice your Diving Skills.

The description and info goes on and on.....

SubSea Resort

Someone beat me to it didnt they! Actually my plan wouldnt include all the marine life. It would be too difficult to maintain. I was leaning more towards a lifeless environment, at least to begin with.

If and when SubSea Resorts builds a resort in the states....I'll be there with flippers on! :)

By the way....you can dive the huge tank at Disney's Epcot
"The Living Seas". Simply call in advance and schedule it, and bring your scuba gear. I think you can dive for 30-60 minutes. I read a story about an individual who dove it, and spoke of swimming to the windows where people were watching him like a fish in an aquarium. Sounds like fun!!

ScubyDoo:
Your idea was a brilliant one. Those Brits ..were just faster this time.
Of cource there is a McDonalds and a Burger King ..so there is room for more then one of these 'ideas' to be brought to light.

I went diving last Saturday in a converted freight elevator shaft. It even had fish. (It was setup as a training facility.) Around here, any old puddle will do. But .....

I can see it now -- gin clear water, exotic tropical fish, no waves or surface swim, no boat fees, and all close to my home! That would be great. Count me in.

Just make sure it has an underwater tank filling station. Not that it would be possible or plausible, but the idea of unlimited, unassisted bottom time intrigues me (well, on 50% really shallow NDL is a long time). Oh yeah, i also want secret, air-filled rooms. that would be cool.

brandon.

ps how much is this gonna cost?

Now theres a thought.......an underwater hotel. How about an underwater Hotel in Bonaire, Belize, Caymans (take your pick) which has boat/ferry access from the surface. That way you can travel to/from your luxury suites for land based activities. Only the hotel lobby is topside. From the lobby you take elevators or escalators down to the Suite levels. Each suite has a securable moon pool for easy accessible scuba diving, as well as large portals for viewing the underwater environment. This would redefine a surface interval wouldnt it :)
