I'm a Fish!
Anyone know what the deal is with getting a few bugs for dinner in Maine ?
Back 30 yrs ago diving long island sound we would build a fire on the beach and cover it with seaweed and have a feast of lobster and clams after a day of diving... Can a diver hand / net lobsters in maine waters ?

thanks...
Jim

I think it's a BIG No No....in anyway..shape...or form...to dive for Lobbys in Maine.....Sounds fun on Long Island though!

Yes:

1. restaurant
2. seafood shop
3. fisherman

I implore you to not risk life, limb and future happiness by taking lobster whilst diving in Maine. Even touching the traps is a bad idea.

Get out of here.... A diver can't grab a bug for his own dinner? Can we spear fish? Isn't there a fishing licence or something .... OR.... Have the lobster fisherman claimed all lobster in Maine waters all for them and none for us?

And it was a great end to a diving day.... campfire cooked dinner, COLD beer...warm woman;) and song...

Just for safty sake, and keeping your gear !! if you do buy lobsters in maine after or before your dive you BETTER have a reciept for them !! even if you bought them and are sitting on the beach eatting them with your dive gear around, you will have a hard time explaining that one to game officer, they Will asume you got them diving and you loose it all.

It looks like you get them in Mass... what about NH?

Divers with a permit can take them in Mass. I am unsure about NH at this time. The Eagles will freeze over before Maine ever allows divers to take lobster. Do not, do not, do not come out of the water in Maine with a lobster. Do not, do not, do not, even putter around a trap if you see one.

I see..... I think I get the message.... Don't bring lobster to the beach... AND, Think I'll start poking around as to "WHY" it's like that.... Thanks for the reply's and I'll break the news to the wife...:("NO ROMANTIC LOBSTER BAKES" on the beach...

Maine has/had only a few main industries; fishing, farming, forestry. Now it caters to tourists. Fishermen depend on the lobsters for their
livelyhoods and can be hostile to each other so it is no surprise that divers are seen as a threat. With that said I have recovered traps for a fisherman I know.

And the funny thing is... It was against the law to " make " servants eat lobster more then twice a week in the 1800's... Back in time a person could wade in to the surf and pull lobsters out by to handfuls.. It was junk meat that poor people eat... Just goes to show you what " MARKETING " can do...

Looking at the laws of Maine, There is a non-commercial permit.. put you have to use a trap from a boat.... Now what if I chased them in to the trap and then got in the boat and hauled it in...:eyebrow:
