Hi,

I'm a BSAC Advanced Diver and OWI and I've signed up to do the Advanced Instructor Course, if all goes well I'm hoping to do the exam either later this year or some point in 2026.

There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of advice on the instructor section of the website for AI, does anyone who's done it already have any suggestions? I'm concerned that my seamanship might not be up to scratch since my club doesn't have a RHIB. I've been on them and have done the boat handling course, but don't have loads of experience of boat driving, shotting wrecks etc.

Any advice/suggestions/feedback from previous candidates gratefully received!

Keep in mind an AI is expected to teach add-hoc lessons. You’ve already proved you can teach the BSAC syllabus up to DL. Concentrate on Dive Planning, know how to read charts (whether RIB or Hard-boat), study different kit configurations. Brush up on navigation and rules of the road for boating. Think about how you would evaluate whether the “old timer” OWIs you know are teaching the latest thinking.

Find an AI who can mentor you.
