Ok, so I look like rudolph the purple nosed reindeer after I dive. I try not to squeeze my nose so hard when I clear my ears, but I always get a bruised nose anyway. Does anyone have a solution to this?

It took me about 3 tries to get the ideal mask. My first one had a really small nose pocket and would give me nose bleeds (pre-sinus surgery).

I now have an Oceanic mask which has higher nose bridge plastic piece, is low volume and has a larger nose pocket. I can usually clear now without pinching my nose.

Maybe one of the docs can help assess a possible physical problem, but don't overlook getting a different mask (or stop squeezing your nose so hard!) Good luck! :small:

I find that with my sport mask (Cressi Big Eyes) I can simply push the bottom of the mask pocket up and block my nostrils to equalize.
Less trauma to the schnozzzzz. :D

Thanks guys...I hadn't even considered it being a mask issue. I'll definitely look into trying a different mask and trying your way of clearing Pipedope!

Yes actually I do. I am borderline anemic. Had a big scare a year ago because I woke up with these terrible bruises all over my legs from when I did yoga the night before (this had never happened!) So I got poked and proded a lot and eventually the docs decided it was because I have low iron, and low numbers of platelets. Nothing to get too excited about but if they drop just a bit I look like someone beat me up! I try to keep my iron up because I get really tired if I don't (liver and onions anyone?) but there's nothing to do about the whole platelet and clotting factors thing. But I sure do hate wandering around looking like :rednose:

VaScubaGirl,

Nothing to get too excited about....I don't know....

There are a variety of reasons why you would bruise easily. Jambi asked a very logical and important question.

There are hematologic conditions which may cause you to intermittently fail to clot or lead to spontaneous bruising. You should consider having the condition DIAGNOSED.

Periodically, I have a patient come in with a low platelet count. If I were to do an extraction during these episodes, there would be a bloody mess and very likely, the patient would have to go to the hospital.

The word anemia can mean a lot of things...anything from low red cell count or hemoglobin to low white cells or platelets.

I would certainly want to know what kind of problem I have, if it can be potentially serious. Can it affect my diving or lifestyles?

Bruised noses are not the norm...Why did your nose bruise? Pinching should not cause the problem unless there is an underlying reason.

Check again with your doctor and get a better diagnosis than anemic. Find out EXACTLY what kind of anemia it is, what kind of blood components are affected and if the anemia and the bruising are actually related.

Please take this as a "lay" response. This is way beyond the scope of dentistry.

While I do not believe that you need be overly alarmed, I do share Dr. Stein's mild disquietude about your descriptions. Some pretty nasty conditions can start with features of easy bruising & borderline platelet count abnormalities, and then move on to much more pernicious manifestations.

If you are not fully convinced that the poking & prodding which you underwent resulted in a confident diagnosis & optimal treatment program, you may wish to seek further evaluation.

This is educational only and does not constitute or imply a doctor-patient relationship. It is not medical advice to you or any other individual, and should not be construed as such.

Hey guys, thanks for the concern and the advice. When I had my episode of rather severe bruising last year, I went to the doctor and they couldn't find anything wrong with me (at least not with whatever blood tests they ran). They did say that I have low iron and low numbers of white blood cells and that they thought the reason that I experiences a sudden uexplainable onslaught of bruising was because I had a "dip" in either my clotting factors or platlets but that it must now be back to normal. I have always bruised easily, but never that easily. So let me ask you this, given the above, is it worth going and having more tests run? I would like to know if there is anything wrong and if it is harmful, but at the same time, I don't like needles very much and hate the thought of giving up blood and subjecting myself to a baroge of tests if they are still going to come back and say they can't find anything at this point in time. Thanks again! =) And DocVikingo, no worries, I won't misconstrue anything, just looking for some good advice. :)

VaScubaGirl,

A "dip" in either clotting factors or platelets is not exactly "normal".

For your peace of mind, you might want to follow up on this potential problem. This is a case of what you don't know might hurt you.

In my practice, over the years, I have had at least 3 patients with bleeding dyscrasias who's only symptoms were bruising. It wasn't until some minor surgery that the condition became a problem.

No, they didn't bleed to death but had they been in for general surgery and not said anything, it would have been serious.

Just my $.02:rolleyes:
