"Under pressure to accommodate growth without drawing water from the Everglades, Broward County is considering a plan to replenish underground sources of drinking water by discharging treated sewage into canals.

The county's environmental staff has drafted a proposal to lower water-quality standards for canals so they could accept highly treated sewage without exceeding legal pollution levels."

If I break the law I go to jail, if broward county breaks the law, they change the law. This is going to be dumping loads of nitrogen right into the ocean.

Sounds like they are going intentionally create what we're dealing with through form of natural run off here. If they go through with it, get used to a summer long Red Tide!

What a disgrace

Can you nail a party on that?

Can you nail a party on that?

The one in favor of development, the one that takes BIG BUCKS from developers, I think it's called business as usual. Money isn't particular as to which party a commisioner belongs to. The city/county commisioners give million dollar incentives to developers to build condos, as if they wouldn't anyway.

South east Floridas economy is based on tourism and construction. Build, Build, Build and don't worry about the consequences. The dept of environmental regulation is a joke, they do as they are told. I tried to find out if anyone had done a nutrient (phosphate-nitrate) study for the waters off the coast of broward several years ago. No one could give me an answer. No base line, no problem. It makes it real easy to state that there is no proof that nutrient levels have increased.

Depending on how it’s done this could be a good thing. In many cases the shallow limestone aquifers do a great job of filtering any nitrogen or phosphates that flow through them and since they haven’t yet defined what constitutes “high level treatment” it’s very possible that the waste water will actually be diluting the nitrogen and phosphate levels currently existing in the canals due to normal lawn and surface run off.

Given my personal knowledge of the attorney opposing this action I would find it difficult to trust much about the article or the “real” issue. This is the same guy that is widely quoted by several of the major socialist groups in the US, has already begun preparation for challenging the voting machines in Florida months before the election (depending on who wins), claims to be responsible for halting construction of any new power plants in the state (regardless of how clean they are), is leading the fight against all offshore drilling (or any drilling in the US at all), and dozens of other causes. It appears I’ll be facing him again on 11/15 at a Federal hearing and I don’t plan on seeing facts from him this time either – but he is excellent at spinning emotional reactions.

This is the same group that keeps demanding more money from the government for their pet environmental projects but fails to understand there wouldn’t be any money for their projects if not for the businesses and people they so oppose being in the state.

Well it looks someone decided it was a bad idea, it will probably come up again with a lower profile.

A Broward County advisory board on Friday tabled a proposal to allow treated wastewater to be discharged into canals, after environmentalists objected that it would harm wildlife and ruin fishing.

The county's Technical Advisory Committee on water voted unanimously to drop the idea of loosening pollution standards to enable the discharges to take place, allowing the county to explore other options for treating and reusing wastewater.

"I think any decision should be postponed until we've had a thorough investigation," said Ruth H. Clark, a member of the committee. "We're not going to go backward."

Who is this attorney? What's the group?

He's against putting sewage in canals, has worries about the integrity of electronic voting machine, doesn't want drilling off the coast of florida. That's terrible! :D

Who are some of the major socialist groups that quote him?

They discussed the same thing four years ago, and came to the same conclusion based on the same stated issues.
