Hi all. I'm going to Raja Ampat in December. As I read all the info on customs issues there I was wondering - do they charge duty for bringing in camera gear ovr the $250 duty free limit? Thanks

No. I have been many times to Indonesia never had issues with customs over my camera and lighting equipment.

Brand new equipment may arouse interest from the Custom Official if they notice it otherwise you have nothing to worry.
Read the fine detail in the Declaration Form.

Unlike Mexico where nowadays they will apparently shake you down for whatever they can for every camera, housing, strobe, and lens you have, Indonesia from what I can gather is like most other "normal" countries where you're only going to have to pay import duties on things like new-in-box merchandise that you're obviously importing for resale or whatever. Personal possessions should not be subject to any duties, regardless of MSRP or value (unless you're carrying in straight cash or diamonds or something). I travel with in excess of $10K worth of camera gear and I've never had a problem in multiple countries around the Pacific/Asia.

Have not heard anything like that. Just came home a few weeks ago from Indonesia and brought a brand new Nauticam rig in spanking new Pelicans-€10000+ in value, 0 issues. It’s not like Mexico.

I dare to say that Indonesian customs are after rich locals who travel abroad for luxury shopping. As a foreigner tourist the only thing that you need to be careful with, is drugs and stuff.
