I'm a newbie, certified in '04, 16 dives. I live in Melbourne Beach along the barrier reef in Brevard County. Beginning just south of my home are many wreck sites, ancient and modern, running from the Sebastian Inlet south to Hwy 60 in Vero Beach and farther. Many of these wrecks are in about 25 feet of water, from 200 feet to 1/2 mile from shore, reachable on a walk-in dive. I am looking for buddies to check out these sites with me, some of them wrecks from the Spanish 1715 Plate fleet. Mel Fisher owns the recovery rights on the Plate Fleet wrecks, but anyone can dive to look them over. There are dive shops near these sites, in Melbourne and Vero Beach, for renting tanks [nitrox and air], getting fills, and equipment rentals if necessary. I am looking for diving buddies who might share this interest. My interest, more specifically, is to photograph the wrecks. Hope to hear from you!!

That sounds interesting. I visit some friends up in melbourne often, maybe we can do a dive some time. One of my friends is a DM at the Dixie Divers shop on babcock.

Ill send you a PM with my contact info.

Diving from Wabasso to Ft Pierce is great when there's vis. I'm always looking for an excuse to take my kids diving.

Pictures off the beach in this water!?! HA! The vis is pretty crappy on a good day. I have seen days on occasion that a picture could be taken. These wrecks that are listed are hardly noticeable unless you are certian where they are and know what you are looking for..

The conditions are just starting to get good enough to dive down at Pepper Park in Ft. Pierce on the Urca. It'll be a few months, usually July / August before the beaches to the north - Vero, Wabasso clear up to dive. By clear up I mean vis of 10 - 15 ft. Depths are usually 15 ft. It's only on a rair occasion that the Vis by Sebastian Inlet will let you dive McLarty Museum. And ya gotta watch out for the treasure boats - they WILL run you over if given a change [ Opps - didn't see that 4 ft by 6 ft dive flag ]! And don't even think of taking a metal detector in the water - you WILL get caught and you WILL loose all you own and MIGHT even go to jail.

Thanks for your response. I agree about the viz issue, but many of the wrecks are precisely marked and with some luck can be located, particularly if several divers are working the area in concert. Bob

visit the Vero Beach Scuba Club on Facebook or Vero Beach Scuba Club - Home

Our members dive the local wrecks quite often.
