I was diving a while back and there was this guy who was swimming around with just the tank breathing from it freeflow (just that tank and him in the water. I know this is dangerous, have anyone else seen this done before? I will never do it but I am just curious

Yeah...I saw it once before...in a movie...Into The Blue. I think if there are people doing this Darwins law will kick in sooner or later and that stupid gene will be erased from the human gene pool sooner rather than later. =;)

Possessing the stupid gene myself I did it after the movie. I've breathed through a free flowing reg so this wasn't really any different.

I suggest not shoving that valve into your mouth like your breakfast donut though.

Cool! But I have to ask, did you try breathing air vented from a car tire after seeing Jame Bond do it? (sorry, can't remember the movie) That would be some pretty stale air, I'm betting.

During the SI between dives in Puerto Vallarto the boat Capt walked over to the used tanks, hefted a few to find one with some air, put on a weightbelt with a couple pounds, the jumped over the side hugging the tank. No BC, no reg, no fins. Just a mask, weightbelt and bare tank. Every thirty seconds or so there would be a big bubble cloud come up. He swam back to the surface about 5 minutes later.

Neat trick. True "minimalist" diving.

I have heard from a few people who had to do this in one of their classes. I think it was rescue diver, don't recall for sure.

I had to do this in PADI's "Basic" class back in the 70s. It's called "nursing." It's surprisingly easy: cup your hand over the valve and breathe off the air pocket formed by your hand and mouth/chin. Use your tounge as a splash guard.

Roak

As others have said, it's not that hard. Not a whole lot different than breathing from a free flow reg. Losing grip of the tank is more dangerous part I think.

I did it in BOW, NASDS, back in '71.

Comes in handy, along with juggling, making a quarter disappear and other parlor tricks.
