That amoeba is not "new" it's been around a long time. When I was a kid (and swam around in hot FL lakes all the time), we knew a kid that died from it. We never worried about it. You have about the same odds of getting eaten by a gator. Which we also never worried about.

I've gotten some nasty skin rashes from swamps that would make brain eating amoeba sound pleasant.
Don’t ask me to be your dive buddy :)
 
It gets headlines here in the Southwest every few years. It's that really warm stagnant water that is the worst for it...
