OK. I have been a back inflate bc guy from the beginning, but would like to know about the bp/w setup. I have read the pro con threads. My question is: What is a complete setup. I mean they sell these things in peices and I have no Idea what all I need or how much one should cost. I am 6' 270. I wear an XL BC. Any advice would be appreciated.

Look at web sites for Diverite, Golem Gear, Halcyon, or Deep Sea Supply. All good equipment. You will see pictures, prices, other info.

hmm. ok.

a backplate. stainless steel or aluminum or kydex type stuff. heavy for singles or drysuit, light for travel, all just things to consider. you can always add lead to a kydex plate setup with a belt or whatever, and i've traveled with a stainless plate, so it's totally your choice.

a harness. there are several kinds, but the most basic is the 'continuous piece of webbing' type. the kits usually come with the d-rings and buckle. the more complex ones with quick disconnects and chest straps are, in my opinion, mainly a distraction unless you have mobility problems and need to undo a strap instead of slithering out.

consider cam band pockets made to hold lead weights if you're diving singles. oh, yeah, you'll need cam bands either by themselves or with an sta - single tank adapter.

a crotch strap. one or two inches. either is fine.

a wing. a singles wing for singles or a doubles wing for doubles.

a tank or two.

regs and spg and inflator hose(s).

some bolt snaps (marine grade, probably not found at lowe's) and cave line (braided nylon, which i *have* found at lowe's in the chalk-snapping section) isn't required but sure comes in handy!

most if not all of these are fine to buy used. check here or thedecostop.com if that's the route you want. i also got a plate on ebay & my brother picked it up for me to save me shipping.

You basically need the harness (simple/comfort) the back plate (AL/SS/Kydex) and the wing of appropriate lift. Further the weight system of your choice (pockets, harness, v-weight for doubles, weighted STA for single tank), If you dive single tanks the means to attach the tank - STA or bands.

Backplate
A plate, made of Stainless Steel or Aluminum
A continuous piece of webbing that consists of shoulder straps and waist strap
A crotch strap which is attached to the plate
(possible padding/ storage pack)

Wing
Variety of manufactures make wings for single or double tanks.

STA (single tank adapter)
These are either weighted or stand alone and are a quick way to attach a single tank to the backplate.

Some backplates have slots which need cam bands woven through them in order to work.

Look at this website to give you an idea of all the above components....

Our "Complete Rigs" are in fact a complete BC

Look here :https://www.deepseasupply.com/index.php?page=rigs

Included is:

A Back plate

A Complete Harness including a crotch strap

A wing including the LP hose

A pair of Cambands and Wedge Blocks (single rigs only)

If you'd like a specific recommendation for your application let me know.

Ok cool. Thats what I was looking for. Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing something when looking into them.

The whole BP/W stuff is so modular that it can seem a little DIY (even though it isn't). And there are also many very good brands and products to select from.

Tobin (Deep Sea Supply aka DSS) sells a complete kit that works out of the box (what he listed plus, perhaps, a DIR knife). I like (and own) some of his stuff. You can make it easy on yourself and just call him or read on...

So here is what I would include in my list if you are diving a single tank:

Backplate -- Lots of choices in sizes and materials. A SS plate is sturdy and takes weight off the belt. An aluminum or kydex plate is lighter for travel.

Two Cam Bands -- Needed to attach the tank to the plate. Something like the wedge blocks are also darn handy.

Harness -- You can do something like a simple HOG or one of the comfort harnesses. A hog harness consists of one long piece of two inch resin impregnated webbing, a weight belt buckle, some d rings and some tri-glides. Often sold in a single kit.

Crotch Strap -- These are important and not nearly as problematic or uncomfortable as one might think. You want the softer webbing for this area

Wing -- Lots of choices. Most (all?) come with a lp inflator hose. The trick here is to get the right wing for the right job. Don't get a wing that is designed for both singles and doubles -- if you dive singles now, get a singles wing now.

Odds & Ends -- I like a couple of marine grade bolt snaps, some cave line and a few extra tri-glides. Perhaps a DIR knife. The bolt snaps I use to attach things like my pressure guage, octo holder or dive lights to a d-ring. I often get the single ended bolt snaps so I use cave line to attached the SPG or an oct holder to the bolt snap. The extra tri-glides I use to hold anything I keep on my waist band in place. Depending on the plate, you also use them to keep the harness from moving (not needed on a DSS plate).

Here are some other possible considerations:
a) Do you need a single tank adapter (STA)? I don't need one with my DSS set up but other wings do require them.
b) Do you need sex bolts? I don't need any with my DSS set up but some wings do require them (to help attach the wing to the plate).
c) Other stuff. The key here is to get only what you need and avoid adding too many things you don't really need.

Like what? I went with a hog harness and found no need for the extra padding (back plate plate, shoulder pads) that is sold. I was also fine without all of the extra things in a comfort harness such as quick releases. You do need to figure out pockets -- lots of choices. You can use a pair of x-shorts or glue pockets onto an exposure suit. I went with a zippered pocket from dive rite on my waist belt. (Holds a sausage, mirror, Ikelite pca, mask defog). For additional weights, I use a DUI Classic Weight & Trim Harness.
