bill was teasing me so i teased back. see how he put 'deluxe' in quotes? and, actually, it is nice, with the already-done grommet and the circular webbing protectors.

Thanks to everyone who has responded and PMed me with recommendations. I'd still like to hear from some others who have used harnesses other than the continuous webbing. Any TransPlate users, IQ Pack users or Matrix users out there? Any one use the OMS wings with the shoulder dump? Hammerhead plates?

I'd like to hear opinions on the TransPlate also. It is something I have considered.

I use an OMS Comfort Harness (purchased from Leisure Pro), a Hammerhead plate (purchased from Hammerhead), and a Halcyon wing (purchased from Hollywood Divers). I use the comfordt harness because of the reasons you said earlier about not liking a continuous harness. I have been very happy. I purchased a Hammerhead plate because of the price and guarantee. I have been very happy with both. I purchased a Halcyon wing because, well I just wanted to upset the DIR divers I dive with. I have been very, very happy with this configuration. I am a recreational diver who enjoys diving the Great Lakes.

It really sounds like what you want is what you already got :)

If you want a buckle in your webbing you can put a weight belt buckle at the left shoulder or buy the harnes with a QR built in. I suppose these are easier to get out of but they sometimes open by themselves.

Padding stikes me as unnecessary if you are already wearing neoprene. I use a transpac without the padding. It was just a lot of clutter. And I never use the QRs on the shoulder straps.

You can pick the plate up by the harness why would you need a special strap?

No, my BC isn't nearly as rigid as a BP and STA. Nor does it trim horizontally as easlily. But I get your point. I want my cake and eat it, too.

It's not the QR as much as the adjustable shoulder straps.

I don't always dive in neoprene. I use everything from a 7mm to nothing. . . .

The point is that it is not a strap. My current BC has a rigid handle in the plastic back "plate" (for lack of a better word). The Hammerhead plate has a handle molded into the plate. This seems a much more secure way to grip the BC or BP with a tank attached.

That handle is more secure - unless the tank strap is open or too loose. I use one of those backpacks in the tropics with a wing. Most people -like when you are handing up your gear to the guy on the boat- tend to ignore it and grab the valve. I tend to use the handle but watch my toes. :)

The soft pac styles like the trans pac won't give the trim/stability you get from a SS plate. But some of that is personal feel. I like mine just fine. If you took the hardpack out of your Nighthawk (if it is the kind that comes out), you might find a backpack that could be converted to a stable backpack.

With the QRs you just run into the old arguments about failure points and dangling tag ends. I think this is very much a YMMV issue. On a well adjusted BP/W the straps shouldn't need to be adjusted during the dive or to get in and out. I think the QRs that are used are pretty much generic from brand to brand.

Try the tank valve.
